a Birth Control question

i've been using ortho evra (aka "the patch") for the past couple of years and loved it - just stick it on and forget about it till next week. Well, recently my health care provider convinced me to swith to YAZ, a low dose pill, b/c of all the coverage that ortho evra has been getting about extremely elevated risks of blood clots, etc.

anyway, so i know you're supposed to take it at approximately the same time everyday so that you always have the hormones in your system, but how much time do you have if you "forget" to take it and still be ok i'm still trying to get used to having to remember to take a pill everyday and i'm asking b/c i took it 5 hours after i was supposed to today

Thanks, in advance, for your help

It depends on your body. Some people will have breakthrough bleeding if they miss pills by 0 mins others will have none. I think with low dose pills you have to try to take it at the same time each day. I have not had success with bcp so I gave up.

5 hours shouldn't matter. i've missed a full day and i was still okay. also, if you read the directions that come with the pack, it says you're safe until 2-3 days since you've missed a pill. they recommend that you use backup contraception though.

What do you mean by 'safe'?

I've been on microgestin, a low dose hormone pill similar to yours, for over a year. I set a cell phone alarm for 2:30 everyday, but sometimes I'll take it up to 4 hours late, and haven't had any problems so far. I think if most days you take it at the same time, and a few you're late it's fine. And yeah you can accidentally skip a day and still be fine. You probably know the basics of how it works, so to summarize; if your hormone levels fluctuate because you take some pills close together and others far apart, your body will get confused and may release an egg while you're still taking the hormones, which could result in baby. Just choose a time that is convenient for you most days.

ETA ^ safe means you can have sex in those 2-3 days and not be too worried about getting pregz. And you don't have to start a new pack.

Quote:
1. TAKE ONE PILL AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY UNTIL THE
PACK IS EMPTY
Do not skip pills even if you are spotting or bleeding between
monthly periods or feel sick to your stomach (nausea).
Do not skip pills even if you do not have sex very often.
2. WHEN YOU FINISH A PACK OF PILLS:
Start the next pack on the day after your last white "reminder"
pill. Do not wait any days between packs.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU MISS PILLS
If you MISS 1 light pink "active" pill in Week 1 of your pack:
1. Take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at your regular
time. This means you may take two pills in one day.
2. You do not need to use a back-up birth control method if you have sex.
If you MISS 2 light pink "active" pills in a row in WEEK 1 or WEEK 2
of your pack:
1. Take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the next day.
2. Then take one pill a day until you finish the pack.
3. You COULD BECOME PREGNANT if you have sex in the 7 days
after you restart your pills. You MUST use another birth control
method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a back-up
for those 7 days.
If you MISS 2 light pink "active" pills in a row in WEEK 3 or Week 4
of your pack:
1. If you are a Day 1 Starter:
THROW OUT the rest of the pill pack and start a new pack that
same day.
If you are a Sunday Starter:
Keep taking one pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, THROW
OUT the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day.
2. You COULD BECOME PREGNANT if you have sex in the 7 days
after you restart your pills. You MUST use another birth control
method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a back-up
for those 7 days.
3. You may not have your period this month but this is expected.
However, if you miss your period two months in a row, call your
healthcare provider because you might be pregnant.
If you MISS 3 OR MORE light pink "active" pills in a row during
ANY Week:
1. If you are a Day 1 Starter:
THROW OUT the rest of the pill pack and start a new pack that
same day.
If you are a Sunday Starter:
Keep taking 1 pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, THROW OUT
the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day.
2. You COULD BECOME PREGNANT if you have sex in the 7 days
after you restart pills. You MUST use another birth control
method (such as condoms or spermicides) as a back-up for
those 7 days.
3. You may not have your period this month but this is expected.
However, if you miss your period two months in a row, call your
healthcare provider because you might be pregnant.
If you MISS ANY of the 4 white "reminder" pills in Week 4:
THROW AWAY the pills you missed.
Keep taking one pill each day until the pack is empty.
You do not need a back-up method of birth control.
FINALLY, IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE
PILLS YOU HAVE MISSED:
Use a BACK-UP METHOD (such as condoms or spermicides)
anytime you have sex.
KEEP TAKING ONE ACTIVE LIGHT PINK PILL EACH DAY until you
can contact your healthcare provider.

^ Wow. That's not for every kind though right?

Anyway, I was always told to take it ON TIME ALL THE TIME period. And I've never had problems. If you mess up - it's safest to use a back up method.

What helped me remember was setting an alarm on my cell actually. If I didn't have that, I would forget all the time.

For low dose pills like Yaz, you ideally want to take it within a 3-hour window. You should be 'safe' even if you are a few hours late for one day, as long as you usually take it on time.

If you are more than 24 hours late (ie: missing a day), you should follow the directions on the pack and use backup for 7 days. This is just to be super safe! The 'worst' pills to miss from a pregnancy risk standpoint are the first and last active pills of a pack.

i read the "what if you miss a pill" guide on the yaz site too...but it wasn't too specific about missing just one pill during any week after week 1, just 2 or more in a row...i guess that meant that it's neglible.

thanks for your help everyone...i feel more at ease now

my gyno told me this holds true for all bcp:

if you take it perfectly (ie; on time every day, no late pills or missed pills) it is about 98% effective. however, most people do not take it on time (within an hour), so it is only about 92% effective. the later you are with a pill, the less effective it is (the more the percentage goes down, and I think it goes down exponentially) for something like the next 48 hours until your cycle is back to normal.

so I guess it comes down to what percentage you consider "safe"

I kno those numbers are kind of random, but that is what she tells me

It's not 'safe' if they are recommending backup. Please don't give false information to people, especially when it comes to birth control.

...and right here is why you hear of so many women saying they got pregnant while using BCP. If you miss your pill even by a few hours and do NOT want to get pregnant (which I assume, since you're taking BCP), you MUST use a back-up method. Don't risk it.

If you miss one pill, you should take it as soon as you remember. This might mean taking 2 pills in one day (24 hours) - that's ok! However if it's close to your next pill time (anything within 6 hours = close), just skip it and take your next pill on time. Don't take two pills at once. You don't need to use a backup method if you only miss one pill.

However if you've missed one pill AND haven't been taking your pill properly (ie: early/late, missed pills earlier in the pack) - use backup contraception for the next 7 days just to be safe

I got pregnant when I was taking the low-dose pill. I never missed a day and I *almost* always took it every morning between 7:15-7:30, but then I took it a little late once or twice and had a very traumatic ectopic pregnancy. It's really not worth it to not use a back-up.

Needless to say, I don't use hormonal bc anymore.

I never take mine at the same time, and have a tendency to frequently forget (but I have never forgotten more than 1 pill), but I am also NOT taking the pill to avoid becoming pregnant. I don't really have that problem, lol. If I was sexually active, though, you had better be damn sure that even if I missed just that 1 little pill once every 5 weeks or so, I would definitely use another form of BC. Don't screw around with pregnancy. edit-(pun completely unintended).

I always take my pill right after I brush my teeth before bed, and have them next to my toothbrush so I don't forget. That being said though, I rarely go to bed at the same every night. I use a back up method 90% of the time. It's just not worth it to me to take that chance.

I have also heard what julia2009 said about %'s - not sure on actual numbers though. The effect of not taking your pill on time is different depending on the type of pill you have. Some even a few hours is really risky, some are ok for 12 or 24 or whatever. The instructions in the pack are usually pretty good, or you can ask your doc or pharmacist.
