Has anyone here had their tonsils removed?

Ok basically I have had tonsillitis 5 times in the last 12 months & I am getting tired of it. I am allergic to Penicillin which means that my tonsillitis can be difficult to treat
I am seriously contemplating just having my tonsils removed but my Doctor is not very keen & says this should be a last resort.
I would like to hear from anyone that has has this done- did you have them surgically removed or lasered? What was the pain like after & how long did it take to recover?
Any opinions/ advice welcomed, thanks!

I have not, but my daughter had them removed when she was 3. She did awesome and bounced back pretty quick. From what I understand, the older you have them removed, the more painful. I have also heard that for adults, it is a last resort. However, if you are getting sick that often, it may be worth the pain/recovery time for you.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I had them surgically removed when i was 8. i can't really remember anything about the pain because it was so long ago. Perhaps i can consult the scrapbook my grade 2 teacher made me make about my stay in the hospital. That asshole.

I have the same issue; I got strep throat 3 times in one year a few years ago. I'm allergic to penicillin and erythromycin, so I'm pretty screwed. They gave me the Z-pack and that got rid of it for me. I asked about tonsil removal and they pretty much said no to me as well.

My oldest daughter (she's 10) has had strep a kabillion times as well, but they want to wait it out.

I haven't had mines removed but my daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed when she was 2. Didn't seem like she had any problems to me, she returned to herself in about a day and half. Of course the 1st day she wasn't doing any talking or anything and she was pretty much medicated to keep her drowsy. From what I hear it feels like a sore throat almost and you really do not want to eat or drink because of the irritation to the throat area.

My daughter had her tonsils removed when she was 16. She was only down for a couple of days. With her pain meds she did well. I was surprised at how quickly she recovered due to the horror stories I had heard.

My sister had her tonsils removed at 17 I think. It's kind of her fault for getting to the point that she got tonsillitis so often though - she never finishes her antibiotics. She had the scalpel surgery and recovered fairly well I think but I wasn't around the house at the time so I'm not 100% sure.

My dad had his surgically removed a few years ago in his mid 40's. The first couple days were real painful but he recovered within less than 2 weeks.

I didn't have mine removed but my sister did when she was a young child. She bounced back in a couple of days but I think that is just the nature of children. That being said... one reason docs are hesistant about taking out tonsils (IMO) is because you can still get strep throat. Just getting them taken out doesn't mean you can't get it again. My sister still gets it once in awhile...

Thanks for the replies
I think I am going to tell me doc I definitely want them out. Mainly because I am worried about getting tonsillitis when Im on hol or something & I cant even take antibiotics to treat it. It sounds to me like the pain after isnt that bad, and I have a high pain threshold anyway so I think its best to just get it done
