Cartilage Piercing, is this normal?

So I got my cartilage piercing about a week ago. I was told to use sea-salt water solution to clean it. The first few days were great, hardly any pain. But in the last three days my ear started to hurt and turn red.

Today, I finally got sick of it and tried to figure out what was wrong. I lifted the ring up and felt around the area. I have a feeling the ring they gave for my ear was too tight. Here's a picture of the first day.

The ring has been resting against my ear for the last week. I don't know if this makes sense, but when I felt around the area where the captive bead usually rests against my ear, I could feel the exact circular indent in my ear. Like the hard parts of my cartilage dissapeared there. Is that normal?

I lifted the ring so that it doesn't touch that part of my ear now. The redness and the pant eased up. But now I have this blister looking dry hard spot.

Will it go away? Will that soft spot in my ear heal and turn hard again? Is anyone here familiar with body piercings? I tried calling the place that does my piercings but they're already closed for the night. I've heard so many horror stories about cartilage piercings going wrong and surgeries resulting after. Should I go see the doctor?

I think you might just be allergic to the piercing itself.

cartilage piercings are notoriously difficult to heal, so you're not alone in having problems. from the pics, it looks like your ring was too small, or you had an abnormal amount of swelling.

what were the exact directions that your piercer gave you for cleaning, i.e. what to use, how long to use it, etc.?
what type of metal is the ring made of? (i can't quite tell in the pics)
have you been touching it?

(once a day)
1/2 tbsp of sea salt mixed with 1 cup of warm water
soak ear for 5 minutes
then use q-tip to clean the ring
rinse with cold water & dry

The ring is made out of surgical steel. I'm almost certain that I'm not allergic to that as i've had my navel pierced and had not allergic relations to the actual metal.

I haven't been touching it minus during washes. I've also been tying my hair up for the last couple of days.

I think you're right about the ring being too small. Perhaps it got too tight when my ear started swelling. I kept it lifted up like in the 2nd picture all day yesterday and yesterday night. The swelling has gone down & same with the redness. But it's sill noticible. The blister part has hardened though. Now it looks like a scab/blood clot with a bump. I hope it goes away.

Should I be changing the hoop to one that's bigger? I'm afraid it'll irrate it more.

i personally don't like the "salt only" washing directions. i think it's a helpful addition, but you still need to be cleaning with an anti-bacterial soap and/or spray.

what had my clients do was this (and what i do for mine):
2x per day (for the first 7-10 days)
-wash with warm or lukewarm water and an antibacterial BAR soap. never use liquid soap. (the warm water will break up the lymph that will crust around your piercing.)
-get a good lather on your fingertips, washing around the piercing and the jewlery itself. turn your hoop thru your piercing so the soap gets into it. then rinse, turning again to get the soap out.
- pat dry with a paper towel (regular towels/hand towels retain bacteria, so it's best not to use them to dry off with.)
-apply some Bactine to each side of your piercing with a q-tip. this has a mild painkiller in addition to being an antiseptic. some people find it very drying, if that is the case, only use once per day for a shorter amount of time. don't use it longer than the 10 days.

after 10 days to 3 months:
-wash 2x per day with antibacterial soap as above and pat dry.

if you realize that you've been fiddling with it or you get really sweaty, just wash it an extra time.

i do think that it was just the initial swelling that caused the redness and irritation. most likely the blister part is a build up of lymph, which will harden and crust. just leave that part alone (i.e. don't pick at it) and it should be fine.

don't change your jewelry- i think that will cause unneeded irritation. just keep wearing it flipped up like you are with your hair back so it can breathe.

also be aware that cartilage piercings can take a full year or more to heal, so you have to be very attentive to them for quite a bit of time. it's going to be red and irritated for at least a week, so that's normal.

i honestly don't think it would hurt it, as long as you didn't attempt to apply it to the inside of your mouth! lol.

you should see a doctor and get it checked out...i got my cartilage pierced a year ago and it got infected and swollen, but he prescribed me some antibiotics and it cleared up in less than a week. also, i'mnot sure it's a good idea to take the piercing out, my doctor said if you do that you run the risk of trapping the infection in the ear.

Hey

I got my first cartilage piercing a year ago and this happened to me with the red hard bump. It is normal swelling of the area and the tightness of the ring will have made this happen. Mine went down but it took 2 weeks so give it time to heal and settle. Do not take it out! If it is infected and you take the ring out the infection will get trapped under your skin when the piercing closes up and this can cause complications! I also got my second cartilage piercing done yesterday.. Hopefully no red bumps this time
