Scary NYT article on Ortho Evra

For years, Johnson & Johnson obscured evidence that its popular Ortho Evra birth control patch delivered much more estrogen than standard birth control pills, potentially increasing the risk of blood clots and strokes, according to internal company documents.

Many of you ladies might know this already from your doctors, but it was news to me. So for anyone else who wasn't aware, interesting read.

Quote:
Because up to half of the estrogen in pills is lost in the digestive tract before it reaches the blood, the study suggested that the patch delivered an amount of estrogen that could be as high as a pill containing 76 micrograms of estrogen. In 1988, the F.D.A. banned birth control pills with more than 50 micrograms of estrogen.

Woah, that is scary! I was on Ortho Evra for about three months before I stopped. I just didn't like it. It had way too much estrogen for me. I am pretty hormonally balanced w/o any drugs and the patch made me gain 15 pounds in 3 months!! After I stopped it though and switched to a low-estrogen pill, the weight literally went away in 3 weeks.

i remember when it first came out, i asked my ob-gyn about it. she said that putting the patch someone my size (aka the size of a 12yo) would most likely end up with me in intensive care. i'll stick with my low-dose BCP's tyvm!

I was never into the concept of the patch to begin with. But still scary...

^ya. this was the first birth control I ever went on, only did it for one month and I passed out twice (once in a movie theater)

that was enough to turn me off it for good

I know a girl (who was 28 at the time) who was on the patch and had an actual stroke. She regained all functions but she had to physical or occupational therapy for a little while.
