Condoms, Birth Control and New Relationships

I'm newly dating and wondering... Do you use both condoms and birth control of some sort when you have sex? And at what point do you stop using condoms? Do you both go get tested for STDS or should you do that prior to having sex the first time. I ask because most people I know don't use condoms if the girl is on BP, but isn't that pretty risky?

both. you never know what could happen. (I heard of a girl conceiving, and giving birth to, twins while on BP, just bc they didn't use a rubber)

you should both get tested for STDs too...sometimes guys don't know what they're carrying, and sometimes condoms don't protect against certain stds.

good luck!

True BC isn't 100% and condoms don't protect you 100% from STDs either...I suppose anything in life is a risk you take.

still risky by all means, BP is not a form of protection and you can still get preggo.
condoms reduce risk, but does not eliminate risk.

Honestly, if you are choosing to get intimate, its your body Char, ask him.

If he really cares about your well being and his, the question will not be a big deal, but I would assume hold greater respect.

Yes use a condom.

but do know, I have personally known friends get STD's because they didn't bother to ask, the guy was like " I dont have anything"
but males can be symptom free, and NEVER know they have one

I know certain ones like HSV you might not ever know you have because you never have any signs or symptoms.

I guess the safest bet is to use BC and condoms but know that your still at risk.

Agreed, I have a friend whose fiance has a strain of HPV that produces warts, and they were together 2-3 years before he finally told her...when he had an outbreak for the first time since they'd met Also, (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe that the strains of HPV that can cause cervical cancer show no signs/symptoms in men, so a man could have it and not even know.

My bf and I have been together 3 years and we still use BC + condoms. It is just not worth the risk for us(plus its not as messy!)

You have to be very careful about STDs. I've only had two partners, both serious relationships, and I had chlamydia for a year and didn't even know it. I found out when I went to get BC before we had intercourse for the first time. So yes, I got it from just oral/"bare rubbing." I was lucky that it is curable, and that it didn't have lasting effects on my body. Always protect yourself! Go together to get tested

I always use a condom...just cuz you never know where they have been.

You can never be too careful and even if you trust the other person there is still the risk that they don't know that they have anything.

Stay safe my dear!!

i think if its a serious relationship and you both trust each other to be monogamous, bcp alone is fine as long as you both get tested beforehand. me and my bf dont use condoms, but we were both given the all clear before and i take my pill religiously.

also, as much as condoms help if stds are an issue, they do not fully protect you (as babyj pointed out) you can still get many of them just from skin to skin contact.

definetly talk it over with the guy and be sure you are both on the same page, better safe than sorry!

I would have him use a condom as well as me using BC because some STD's, like HPV, have no symptoms in males. Just skin to skin contact with someon infected, without symptoms, can transfer it, which is scary!

Hello, you aren't supposed to use your teeth to open the wrapper. Didn't you listen in sex ed?

I recommend using a condom so that it doesn't increase your count JK

Okay seriously, condoms and BCP is One of my good friends got a [curable] STD from his longtime GF who wasn't cheating on him (she lied and the truth came out). I am not saying this will happen to you but it is better to be safe then sorry since there is no cure for Herpes or HIV.

Yep, definetly use both! I conceived while on the pill and I have a beautiful 8yr old little man to proove it

I had been taking it for a couple of years so it's not like I didn't know how to take it, or I had just started, or whatever.... I guess I was just part of the 1% that didn't work.

My last relationship lasted almost 6 yrs. and we only stopped using condoms after a couple yrs. but I was still on BP. Then I found out he was cheating on me, so bad idea. We broke up, I got checked out and everything was fine, but still, the lesson I learned was that even in a serious relationship you cannot trust someone else with your personal health.

Now I am dating and I use both. If I am ever in a serious realtionship again I will have to decide at which point to trust and not use condoms. But for now... always use both!

Actually, I may have forgotten how to open one. It's been more than 16 years since I've had to put a hat on.

Can you still get STD's if partners are both clean?
Can't you?

No. WTF, where is the logic in that? You can only get an STD/STI from someone who is already infected.

I mean I guess I was thinking too far ahead.

I was thinking like what if one person is sick? Flu or something, is it possible then?

Condoms are used to prevent the spread of STDs not the flu.

Well if someone is ill and still partake in sexual intercourse, does that up the chance of STD?

Or if you're clean from STD, you cannot get it at all?

Because then how do people get it anyways if we're clean in the first place?
