HELP! not sure what is happening....

Ok, I thought I'd get some opinions/advice before I decide whether I need to go to the doctors?

All of sudden 2 days ago my legs and ankles have been swollen up with fluid retention. It is like odema which you get when you are pregnant and the last time this happened I was pregnant. Now I am 110% positive that I am not that . Also its not the heat because summer is finished and the weather is actually quite lovely.
My feet and toes are so swollen that I have no shoes that will fit properly. My toes look like little sausages They look so ugly. It is probably from my knees down because when I bend at the knees it feels tight and sore.
It has seemed to have happened all of a sudden. One morning I woke and then it got progressively worse. I can indent my fingers into my skin and the indent stays there.
My hands and fingers aren't too bad, just a little bit swollen, enough that my rings won't come off, but nothing like my legs and feet.
I went to the chemist and have started taking herbal fluid retention tablets and am drinking water by the jugful, but it has not made a damn bit of difference.
I have tried to keep off them as much as possible and when I sit I have been propping them up. Also the last 2 nights I have been sleeping with pillows under them to raise them.
Please help, nothing is working and they look and feel awful

Doctor! And, have you been eating more salt lately? Or have you started taking any new medications lately? Or have you done some exercises where you might have hurt your lower extremities and the body is trying to heal itself?

Yes the earliest I can see the doctor is 2 days time.

The only thing different that I have done lately is go off the OCP. About 2 weeks ago. It was only the mini pill but maybe it has thrown my hormones into disarray?
My diet/eating habits have not changed... but since this has happened I have cut back on everything bad I can think of.
It is not getting worse but is sure isn't getting better. My right leg/foot/ankle is worse. It just seems to be staying there. I just don't understand how it has come on out of the blue?

What is best to do until I see the Dr? Resting with feet up or would walking and keeping active be better?
I'm not in pain as such, just very uncomfortable, the skin feels uggh tight (and they look sooo ugly, damn kankles blah

If you experience any shortness of breath or loss of sensation (feeling, decreased pulse, are your toenails still pink), chest pain then go to the ER immediately. Sometimes, swelling can be due to a blood clot...other causes can be cardiac related (congested heart failure-poorly pumping heart and fluid settles first in the extremities),diet related, medication related. If it were me with lower extremity swelling to that degree, then I would go to urgent care or the ER now. I was an ER nurse for 6 years and I have seen what blood clots can do. You definitely need to be evaluated very soon.

Jen, that doesn't sound very good. Have you been able to see the oc yet? At first I thought it may be gout but you say there's no pain, so it can't be that. Please keep us posted!

I would go straight to the ER. I have no idea what is going on, but obviously something is; you need to find out what ASAP. They should at least give you an Rx for Lasix which should give you some relief.

As far as what to do until you can see an MD, I'd keep legs elevated and do gentle massage working towards your heart. i.e., stroking from ankle to knee to thigh, trying to move the fluid out of your feet and ankles.

I went to ER this morning, they were no help at all. They were so busy and after something like 4 hours some learning dr asked a lot of questions, poked and prodded then just told me to go home and put my feet up, keep drinking lots of water and see my family doctor on Monday. der! easier said than done when you got kids haha

I take Cardaprin (aspirin) daily to thin my blood due to a TIA & mini stroke previously, so I wouldn't think it would be clotting. I was thinking maybe the start of a kidney infection? but he did a urine stick test, came up clear but he said the best test is midstream first thing in the morning. So I will re do this Monday. I thought it was a sign of high blood pressure? however when they took my blood pressure this morning it was quite on the low side

anyways thanks for all the help and advice.

ps my left leg/ankle is getting much better but the right one is the same

oh I'm sorry about your pain, I hope this gets treated soon. I was wondering, could this be due to an allergic reaction or something?

Did they do an EKG (or ECG) at the ER, or any other cardiac function test? Not to scare you or anything, but swelling in the extremities is one symptom of some types of heart failure...was your BP overall lower than normal or just one part of it? I would go back and not leave until they did an EKG.

ER's can be SO useless though...if you aren't bleeding and are conscious it's hard to get them to take you seriously sometimes

Have you been to the chiropractor lately? I heard of someone going, then this happened, he called the chiro to cancel another appt. b/c he was going to the hospital to get a test done (after several others had already been done), and the chiro said "can you come in anyway?" SO, he did, the chiro said, "Oh, I adjusted you the wrong way last time."

Chiro readjusted, dude was fixed, end of story.

WEIRD. but, true, I really heard of that happening.

no I haven't been to the chiropractor.
I am going to my doctor first thing today (monday)
It hasn't got any better or any worse but it is just depressing me now because I can't wear anything but jeans to hide my fat ugly ankles and it is too hot for them today
maybe its just me getting old

and thank you to everyone who offered their comments. Very much appreciated

Do you have a cardiologist?

With your medical history, I am appalled at the lack of concern in the ER. This needs to be followed VERY thoroughly.

^ Isn't that unreal? I had to read that twice to believe it. Crazy ER.

With one of my pregnancies, my heart rate was pretty high and I couldn't get it to slow down; it was over 105 resting. I went to the ER because I could practically feel my body pulse with my heart. Turns out I was dehydrated (it was 95 degrees and I had been out with my other kids). Anyway, the ER had me hooked up to an EKG so fast, and I was on it for long enough...

They usually take no chances; I can't believe they ignored those signs.

It's seriously scary that a classic cardiovascular sign such as this would be ignored in someone with a previous history of CVA.

gee I don't know... I just thought it was fluid retention.

The ER I went to is not a major huge hospital and like someone said, if you aren't half dead already they sort of don't do much. I guess because I have no other symptoms they figure I can wait to see my GP.
They did have all my records from my previous visit 18 months ago. I had complete and thorough work up back then (ECG, MRI, ultrasound of the neck artery, heart moniter that I had to wear over a weekend and some other stuff) Nothing wrong was found.

I have a neurologist, who I have rung this morning. Although I couldn't get on to him his secretary has booked me in for Friday (the earliest) and if my GP dr wants me seen earlier she will squeeze me in.
My GP dr was stuck in traffic this morning and I have had to reschedule to this afternoon.
