Leg Aches....

I get horrible leg aches & sometimes my arms too. Several years ago I thought I had MS because of how bad they were. I went to the doctor & they found nothing wrong. My doc thought my body might be in need of potassium so I started taking all these vitamins & eating bananas (which I hate) & nothing worked.

The aches kind of subsided for a few years only coming back on occasion but now I'm back to aching everyday during the day & at night. Nothing helps. I've tried hot baths, vitamins, & it's useless. I don't take pain releiver because I don't like to. I'm only 30 so I'm pretty sure I don't have arthritis yet.

Does anyone else get bad aches? What do you do?

I should also add that I thought I had MS because of other things as well, like fingers & hands tingling & going numb.

Hi Erica,

I would go see another doctor. Your symptoms don't sound pleasant and should be further investigated by a specialist.

Hope you feel better soon.

Have you been tested for fibromyalgia? Are you having any fatigue?

If it is cramps, add magnesium. My husband has terrible cramps, and all the potassium in the world didn't help. He takes magnesium now and it really works.

One of my coworkers just went to the doctor about chronic leg aches and her doctor thought it might be a pinched nerve in her back or something, so maybe ask about that?

This doesn't sound like cramps. Whatever it is, it should be look at by a specialist.

I have been to specialists & tested for lupus, multiple sclerosis, etc. etc. etc.
I'm not sure if they tested for fibromyalgia though. I'll have to look up symptoms.

They didn't find anything wrong. I was hoping someone had similar issues & could give me some advise.

I'm not fatigued either. I did however break my back when I was 18.....healed though, i don't see if that would have something to do with it.

You broke your back? I bet you need to see a chiro! I seriously doubt it just healed up totally & correctly especially since you were probably still growing. Those injuries usually require maintenance every now and again. The numb hands & fingers are most likely a result of pinched nerves due to a mis alignment. I've been thru the exact same thing & the drs couldn't find anything wrong. Turns out the culprit was 4 pinched nerves in my back & neck. My old injury was a hip dislocation at 20 that never healed properly partly because I was still growing & lack of proper care at the time. HTH

Yeah i can relate to the aches, pains, and tingles. I have a herniated disk and it is pushing against a nerve which makes my leg fall asleep, tingle, and just have a strong pain that just sits there. I would go to the doc for a back check up.

L1....squished like you wouldn't believe. I had to wear a back brace for 6 months.

I'm glad someone else can relate. Seriously, I'm sitting here & my legs hurt. All day long....it's so annoying!

Yep, it is definitely your lower back problem. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor. I broke my back high school too. Chiro has helped immensely. I couldn't sit for more than an hour without having to lie down.

The same thing doctors told me. There isn't anything wrong with your back now. The break has healed and everything looks normal. Except I couldn't sit or stand for more than hour without having my back go into spasms. I would definitely see a chiropractor. The doctors refuse to even consider that a chiro could help...freaking AMA.

To tell you the truth, I've always been skeptical of chiroprators. But, I'm willing to try because this is getting extremely annoying & painful. Do they accept insurance? What do they even do? I get bad feelings that they'll just make things worse.

Nieve i am.

Most chiro do accept insurance. You should talk to your insurance company as well. For instance, my insurance has worked out a discount fee for chiros on their list.

Most chiropractors should offer some sort of discount if you end up having to pay out of pocket.

There is an initial consultation. They may or may not take an x-ray. I don't think you need an x-ray. Get referral from from who may have seen a chiro. If you don't get any immediate relief in the first two weeks, it may not work for you.

I actually want an x-ray because I never went in for my final appointment to see the healed results.....I was 18 & oh so stupid.

I'm calling tomorrow. Thanks for your input...it's really nice to hear about your experience since we have the same back issue in common.

I'm stupid for not thinking of this before but like you said...the docs reassured me that it couldn't be my back.

Erica,

Old school doctors will never ever admit to the fact that chiro helps people with back problems. In the meantime when you sleep, place a comfortable pillow between your legs and try to sleep on your side.

For the tingling of your hands... do you type a lot? Could that be carpal tunnel?

I do this every night. I became accustomed to it when I was pregnant! I'm a natural side sleeper.....i think.

Rivkah--No, I'm not on the computer much. The tingling isn't what's bothering me now...this was a few years back.

If it was only your legs it could have been Restless Legs Syndrome but I haven't heard if it could affect other limbs as well. Does it get better if you move around?

My DH has the exact same thing and it's your sciatic (SP?) that is aching. They suggested back surgery (MRI was last week) but we are going to look into alternatives first. If you haven't had it checked out by a doc, I suggest going.

stupid docs....they really don't know everything even though most ppl. think they do. It took 6 doctors and a cartiladge tear in my knee before someone realized something was really wrong....now I have no knee cartiladge left and look forward to the day arthritis sets in ...I happened to go see my chiro today and I him. You just have to make sure you go to a good one who knows what he/she is doing and that you are comfortable with. ITA w/ Vis and all he has suggested. You could also look into acupuncture. Either way, don't take the first opinion you get from a regular doc, go w/ your gut and have it examined by someone else!!!

You need a full knee construction surgery. The small meniscus tear in the knee will eventually turn arthritic and will require full reconstruction surgery. I have had a lateral meniscus tear in my right knee for about 5 years now. My knee will blow out one of these days. I'll have surgery then. There is no point of doing the snip surgery. That surgery basically is easy money for ortho surgeons.

Vis is right on about that. Why they have issues with them I will never understand! A good chiro will explain how all the nerves & muscles work after an injury & even show you.

Your DH should go in to your chiro for that, totally fixable w/o surgery! I second the accupunture, my chirpo does that too & it helps alot
