PMS and birth control pills

So.. question. I've been on BCP for almost 6 years due to hormonal reasons (FSH too high, estrogenrogesterone ratio too low). I've taken the same brand of pill for about 2 years, and I've never had PMS until recently... I'm just wondering if this new PMS crap is due to the pill or because maybe my natural hormone levels are changing?

ps. i hate pms.

I had a bad time with PMS this month. I'm not on the pill so with me it comes down to whatever's naturally going on...I realized later that I'd eaten a lot more crap food than usual for the past month, and not been going to the gym as much, and I think that's what tends to screw me. I don't know if it's the same for everyone. But when I go easy on fats, sugar, caffeine, and booze (dairy and meat aren't an issue; I'm vegan), it makes a critical difference...that, and exercising a lot. So maybe it isn't your pill or any hormonal levels changing, maybe it's something you're eating or the amount of exercise you're [not] getting.

I tried this homeopathic stuff which seems to take the edge off of the more obnoxious symptoms, as well as "Womans' Moon Cycle" (haha the name is so cheesy!) tea. Both contain natural diuretics and I guess they kinda flushed out my system so I felt better. There's this whole theory...I don't know if I believe it but it's interesting...that water retention, a major PMS symptom, also affects the brain and therefore, your moods. Something worth thinking about I guess...

Hm.. I've actually been really busy lately.. finishing 4th year undergrad as well as working a really demanding clinic job 15 hours a week. I actually don't have much time to eat. So maybe is it because I'm not eating ENOUGH of what I used to? I drink coffee now too cuz I get really sleepy, especially when I have to wake up at 6am for work.

I take Yaz which has a diuretic in it as well. It has helped a lot with PMDD (more severe than PMS). Before I started on pills, I would have actual illness before and during my period + severe mood swings.

I haven't been on it as long as you've been on your pill, so I can't relate any stories to whether or not they get weaker at regulating your hormone levels and PMS symptoms.

P.S. I drink coffee and probably eat way too much sugar, so I am thinking that could have been a major factor in my problems.

iv been on various pills for the last 4+ years...

sometimes your body just develops a natural resistance to them and you start getting side effects which you never had before. I would give it another month, if you still notice something is off go in and see about trying out a different pill

im about ready to give up on hormonal bc

I've never even tried birth control & I'm 30 years old! I guess that's why I have 3 kids...Haha!

All my friends use Mirena & love it.

^ i was told you can only use mirena if you have already had kids.

dunno if that would work for the OP

PS: from what i have heard, the hormones in mirena are just as strong as bcp, so it may not solve ur problem

^ Nope. Because it's inserted directly in your uterus, hormone levels are lower. I think 1/6 or 1/7 of BCP. And Mirena can be used if you haven't had kids. My doctor gave me Mirena as one of my options.

^ Well, I know it shouldn't be the FIRST option for a woman who hasn't given birth, but it is an option. As for the hormone level, maybe the US version has a higher dosage? I know that is the case with the patch.

^ I think it's because the chance of rejection is the highest in women who haven't ever been pregnant. Though if you want it, you can get it, you just need to be informed of the potential risks.

spunky: How long have your PMS symptoms been around for?

ITA. I've been on and off different pills (and the ring) and its always because after a while some sort of side effect eventually comes out.
