Migraines preceded by loss of vision..anyone?

I get these occasionally. In college, they were a regular occurrence and debilitating, but now every once in a while I'll start having spotty vision (like when you stand up too fast and get dizzy) that persists for a long time, and then a faint headache.

Does anyone else get this? The headaches don't tend to be the awful things they once were, but the visual aura is bad enough that I can't leave work right now because I can't see well enough to drive

My friend deals with the same thing! Since middle school.
I don't have any advice, but just to let you know that you're not alone

They are called ocular migraines. I've only had one in my life and it was horrible. My mom has severe migraines and is now on constant meds to stop them.

Have you figured out your triggers? Hormonal?

i get the visual aura before my migraines as well. it's sorta like looking thru a fuzzy tv screen, like one with rabbit ears lol. mine are triggered either by hormones or stress, or the lovely combo of the two. taking a muscle relaxer right after i get the aura seems to help me, but maybe that's b/c i sleep so well

hugs to you, i know how much they suck!

The headache after the aura was a doozy this time. I think it must have been stress related (administering standardized tests, anyone?). I have to call in sick because light hurts my eyes. ARGH.

Last one I got was a few months ago. I was out for dinner with a friend and suddenly realised i couldnt see my food. So I tilted my head and then I could see it, but I couldnt see my arm. Anyways the blindspots increased until I could barely see, and I felt very dizzy. I ended up just bearing it though and went home. The ensuing migrane wasnt too serious

I get these too!! Does anyone take anything that helps? I keep saying I should go to a doctor to see if there is any medicine that might help because they are sooooo horrible, but I have a feeling that there isn't much that can be done.

I have had occular migrains since I was about 3-4, my parents worried it was a brain tumor or something because no one in my family has head aches, but I have been tested and I just am "lucky" and get migrains. My vision goes out about an hour before I get the severe head pains and naseua. The best perscription drug I have tried (I have tried them all....) is Maxalt, it greatly reduces the duration and the severity of the pain, but does not completely stop it. I take it the second I start to see "black" or fuzzies.

I forgot to say that the best thing to do is figure out what your "triggers" are, mine are caffiene and hormones. I can't even have one cup of coffee or I WILL get one, and I was put on the birth control depo shot where it completely eliminates the whole period and hormonal cycle when I was 16. So I havent had a period in 4 years, and have only had 3-4 migraines since (before it was every month)

As soon as i get my rainbow vision, kind of like looking through one of those kaleidoscope things, i take some pain meds, eat something and then try and lie down. If i can catch it quick enough it will pass off, serious ones i take Imigran.

When I get those it is usually because of a combination of exhaustion & glare with a very low barometer. I have learned the begining feeling & take tylenol or excedrin (or both), drink very stong coffee & tie something around my head (so attractive).

Caffeine helps a lot of migrane sufferers.

SaraAlexys - you might see your doc - there are a lot of meds for migraines.
