? about nuva ring

So I'm starting Nuva Ring tomorrow, and I'm horrible at counting days.
So do I count tomorrow as day one and then the next day is day two...etc up until the 21st day and do I take it out the 21st day or take it out the 22nd day? So I'm putting it in tomorrow, the 3rd, do I take it out the 23rd or the 24th?
Also, is it like the pill where I have to wait 7 days til I'm protected?
Thanks. I should have thought of these questions when I was picking up my prescription

I would always put it in on a Sunday and take it out three weeks later on a Sunday morning. Um so I guess that's the 22nd day. I'm not sure if that's totally right but the Sunday/Sunday thing was easiest for me to remember. On my calendar I would put an "I" (for "in") on Sunday and then an "O" (for "out") three Sundays later. It was helpful because a few times in the beginning I forgot to take it out and left it in for 4 weeks

Yes, I would imagine that you should still wait/use double protection for the first week. Better to be safe than sorry.

Your boyfriend might feel it but he'll get used to it. SO felt it at first too but then didn't. Sometimes it would move around and he would be like "oops the ring moved" but it really wasn't a bother after a while.

I have it too and I really like it! Do what Numero suggested and mark it on the calendar. That's the only way I can keep track of it! And... I take mine out cuz it usually comes out anyway during lovin'

if i remember right, you're not fully protected until after the first week. It's probably better to start with the beginning of the month so that you remember

I am currently using this and I really like it
Some facts:
It takes 14 days for your body to adjust to the new BC so use protection until then
^*unless you have been on BC continually for at least 3mo, then you don't have to worry about the adjustment period

You take it out exactly three weeks from the day you put it in, and then insert new ring one week from the day you took it out, even if you have your period still (use the stickers that come with it they help)

You can take it out for up to 3 hours w/o losing any effectiveness

I find that it takes about 3-4 days for my period to come after taking out the ring, and mine are really light; about 2 days at the most.

My BF says he can't really tell that it's there but, I don't think that a guy would really be worried about it at that time

I have had no problems with it coming out at all...it's not really too much of a concern but every few days I just check quickly if it's still there

I used it for a while and loved it - NEVER came out. DH said at first he could feel it in there, but he got over it - no big deal.

It doesn't come out all the time but since it's no big deal to take it out for a couple of hours, I just do...

you guys who have been on it, does it have the same type of side effects that other hormonal methods do (ie the pill, etc)?

im looking for something more local, hoping maybe the hormones will be weaker since its right there you know? lol.

sorry to threadcrap

Yeah, I've heard that the side effects are the same. I had very few (except that my boobs got huge and they *really* hurt every month when I was PMSing) but I've heard others have experienced similar things to the pill. But there are other side effects that are unique to the ring like discharge.

Isn't the Nuva Ring supposed to only be inserted BEFORE sex and then removed? OP, you may need to ask your doctor these questions as I have a friend who used that and forgot to put it in once and baby #4 was born on December 17, 2007!!

I used it and liked it. I didn't have side effects, although the ring doses you with hormones just like the pill. It did come out one time while having intercourse, but it was no big deal. For me, I hated remembering the "in date" and "out date," so I went back on the pill. (You can stumble blindly through a pill pack without ever having to remember dates) Now I have an IUD- and I like it the best of all!!

No, the Nuva Ring stays in all month and is take out at the three week mark to induce your monthly menstration. After one week for menstration, a new one is then reinserted for another three weeks of continual hormone dosing.

^^ Liz, I think the thing you must be thinking of is a diaphragm or sponge.

No, she used Nuva Ring, but I was just confused as to how you use it. I figured since she forgot it, that meant it didn't stay in! Now I understand how it can be forgotten--if you take it out during certain times of the month! That is why I love the Mirena. It goes in and you don't think about it again for 5 years!

another threadcrap question: can you use the nuva ring back to back like the pill, i.e. not get a fake period?

it would seem so since it's one hormone level throughout, like monophasic pills.

I really want to try Mirena, or even the copper IUD because I dont respond well to the pill...I get irritated and moody easily. But the IUDs are soooooo expensive, my insurance pays for half but $200 is still a lot! So I figured I'd try the ring since there is less hormones, but who knows.
If it doesn't work out, then I think the IUD is my last option.
Did the Mirena hurt when it was being put in? I have a low low tolerance for pain, so thats what I'm most worried about.

yes, you can use them back to back and not get your period 4 times a year (every 3 months) i believe. def ask a doc about the details, as i'm not a licensed pro. plus, i just like having my monthly visitor, it's reassuring knowing that i'm not preggo!

Just my personal experience with NuvaRing.

I used it once a few years ago when it first came out. I only used it a couple months after I had fibroid surgery so I didn't have strong periods. I loved it. I raved about it to everyone I know.

I started using it again last year and used it for 6 months. During that 6 months, I'd say after the first couple I started getting yeast infections and I could almost feel it in me. I had it correctly placed too. I finally used the last of my 6 month supply and said forget it. I'm taking a month off. Don't you know, I haven't had a single problem since.

Moral of the story, use it for a few months and see. It may be great for you. Some people never have any issues with it. The idea of it is fabulous as I'm horrible at taking pills and the ring also didn't cause weight gain. But for me, it just irritated my system after awhile so I have to find an alternative.
