winter colds :-(

This time of year always gets me. I feel like from December to March I am constantly battling either a cold or flu-like symptoms or sinus issues and it sucks! I HATE winter! I was supposed to get on a Greyhound today to go up to my parents' house for New Year's but I slept all day! How do you guys deal?

I take my multi vitamins everyday And eat lotsa raw garlic. It might be just a home remedy, but my immune system's been a heck of a lot stronger than 2 years ago.

Drink lots of liquids (no, not Cola! ), get plenty of rest (the more stressed you are, the weaker your immune system gets), get your vit. C (preferably from food), and exercise.

Oh, avoid touching your face (especially when you're among other humans ) and wash hands as often as possible. Those antibacterial liquids are not worth using since they don't kill viruses (most of the time they're to blame for those awful colds).

This is how I avoid them...

I used to get sick with an evil cold or flu three times a year, for 3 weeks at a time. Like, hit with a truck sick for a week, then still feeling awful and disgusting for 2 weeks, and I usually got sinus infections and needed antibiotics. I haven't been sick in months since I changed my diet. Think tons of vegetables and fruit, and only whole grains. (Real fruit, not juice.) It's the basis of Eat to Live, which Jenn has promoted a lot too, because it really works! Obviously you are not going to be disease-proof but you may as well give yourself a fighting chance!

Also I mentioned in the sinus infection thread how to avoid an infection really setting in... neti-pot or saline spray and flonase at the start of any symptoms. You may be able to fight off the early stage of a cold this way.

Well that's what I find kinda weird...I'm a vegan so I eat a lot of whole grains, fruits, and veggies anyway. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm just not eating enough or something. I find it easier to eat enough when I'm working a lot and busting my ass... but when I have downtime, it's almost like I have no concept of how much I'm supposed to eat. I dunno...

If you are worried that you're not eating enough, there's a good chance that you're not. Maybe using something like fitday would be good but use it to make sure that you are eating enough, instead of to limit your intake like most people do.

They say one of the #1 things you can do is wash your hands and not necessarily with anti-bacterial soap. Make sure to get in all the crevices, under the fingernails, inbetween fingers and at least for 20 seconds Don't touch your face...especially your nose, mouth or eyes.

Ugh! I feel the EXACT same way. My allergies are killing me. I have been sick for 2 and half weeks now. I have been resting and eating well and I still feel horrible. half of my face feels like it is going to explode, my eyes are swollen, my nose is stuffed up and running and my head hurts. I have tried every medicine out there-claritin, sudafed, benedryl, etc. and NOTHING helps. I can't even tell I took anything except a little dowsy.

I think mine is being caused by the weather. It will be 19 degrees one night then 60 the next. It has been doing that for the past 2 months and I think that it is making me feel yucky!

I wish it would either just get cold and stay cold or get warm and stay warm so I can feel better.

I just accept it and move on, lol. I really only get sick once a year (December- February-ish time) so looking at the big picture that's not that bad I guess!! haha

p.s. my nose has been running for like 2 weeks now- bleh!

Staying warm has been scientifically proven now to help battle bugs. I try to stay warm now even when I am sick. I just fought a severe case of bronchitis without the use of antibiotics for the first time ever. I took 3000mg of vitamin C on top of multi-vitamin the past 7 days. Get plenty of rest and drink A LOT of fluids. I noticed that my lips were chapped which is the one of signs of dehydration.

I stayed warm as best I could during this time as well. Apparently, if you get cold, you body is busy trying to stay warm and other bodily systems are affected. So, the old wives tale has proven to be true. Keeping your hands clean is just practicing good hygiene.

Hope you feel better soon.

I realized part of my problem is that my apartment is well-heated, but the heat dries the air out, which aggravates my sinuses and sometimes make me cough. So I'm gonna buy a humidifier and see if that helps. Ironically, I might be moving to Savannah next month, in which case I would then need a DEhumidifier! I wonder if I had both, would they just cancel out?
