Does anyone have back problems?

Does anyone on AF back problems? I know there are countless forums related to back issues on the internet, however, I thought it would be nice to talk with people I know and like about it

Long story short. I recently (June) had a discectomy on my L4/L5. I had a herniated disk that was so bad a piece broke off and was pressing against my spinal cord until it was white. My neurosurgeon said I was lucky that I wasn't paralyzed. Right now my back pain is in full force, I was back at the hospital on Wednesday with horrible sciatica in both legs, major swelling etc. I have an appointment on the 23rd with a local neurosurgeon and I'm hoping to get to the bottom of this and praying for dear life that my surgery didn't fail.

Anyway, does anyone have back problems? Tips on sleeping? Did you go to physical therapy, was it successful? Sleeping issues? Bed recommendations? Sleeping position recommendations?

I have what my doctor gave me in terms of exercises and all of that basic information and I am hoping my new doctor will provide me with some information when the time comes. But in the mean time I am curious to hear about anyone else's experiences.

And yes, I know this is a pants forum and I am obviously not asking for medical advice. So no scolding please.

OMG!!! This sounds... Fingers crossed that your surgery will go well!!! I do have a slight problem. During and after birth I suffered quite major pains in my lower back (and shooting pains down my left leg). As it was discovered a few months ago, my lower 4th disk turned quite a bit, so my surgeon was trying to put it back on by doing special long course massages etc. It was very expensive. But it did work. However, he told me to sign up for swimming classes, and swim at least twice a week for 40min straight to strenghthen my spine cord. I am yet to go..

No back issues here, so I can't help you with that.... but I can tell you that I have a Tempur-pedic bed (the now-discontinued "BellaSonna" model) and it's AMAZING!

Before Tempur-Pedic, some days I'd wake up feeling good & well-rested and other days I'd feel not-so-well rested and just kind of stiff and crusty. Since I got the Tempur-Pedic though, I wake up everyday feeling good. Sounds lame, but it's true.

I don't really have any sort of my back pain but I know my dad does. He does do some physical therapy and it works for him. His doctor also told him to swim more as it'll help. And he also uses this ObusForme back cushion for when he's driving.

Hope you feel better soon

Kati, I already had surgery (June), so I'm hoping that I won't have to have another one. Yeah I was quite surprised that my surgeon didn't prescribe me physical therapy. I feel like I really need it. During my next appointment I hope to figure out what is going on, hopefully it's just some inflammation causing the sciatica. *fingers crossed* After my swelling goes down, I think I want to try some swimming or water aerobics classes (nerdy, yes). I have so many limitations right now like I can't golf for 2+ years, can't lift anything over 10 lbs for 1 year, etc. I'm supposed to be walking for 30 mins a day but some days my pain it so bad that it is not happening!! Thanks for your concern

That is so great to hear, Mark! I think I'm going to go try them out this weekend. They are offering 4-year interest free financing, so I think I should take it up. My bed right now is just not doing it for my back. Every morning I wake up and feel stiff and out of line. UGH I thinking about looking at the Cloud. I want something that is soft and firm, but not too firm and not so soft that it doesn't provide any support, you know?

Whoops, you must have wrote this while I was writing. Oh, that sounds awesome. I will have to look into the back cushion. Does your dad happen to work at a desk job? If so, does he use any kind of cushion while at work?

and thanks, Jess!

No , my dad fixes fax machines, printers and photocopiers around the city so he's driving around a lot picking up parts and stuff like that. So unfortunately can't help you with the cushion for an office chair but the one he uses is The ObusUltraForme Backrest (taken from ObusForme website) and on there it says that it takes pressure off your Lumbar disc so it may help you since you've had surgery there

I think I want to try one of those too.

Skyy, did your doc tell you if you can get a regular massage (not the expensive medical kind)? If not, clear it with the doc and then try a swedish massage. It can help relax the the muscles which would probably help a lot. If one thing is out of whack then other things will be as well. I know you probably have a lot of trigger points, but I wouldn't want to get a deep tissue massage with those issues.

Also, what about yoga?

He actually told me no massages for 8 months (i think). I am going to ask my new doctor about it because I feel like it could help me. A swedish massage sounds AMAZING. I will definitely see if my new doc will clear it. I have been considered doing some gentle yoga or something once I get the inflammation to go back down (I started a steroid yesterday and then I will begin Naprosin (sp?) after I finish my steroid pack).

Pretty much all I am doing now is taking muscle relaxers, pain medication and the steroid since my Wednesday visit to the hospital. I have also been rotating with ice and heat. The ER doctor didn't really do anything for me except give me drugs and send me on my way

sky your back pain sounds just awful i am so sorry you are going through this

i can't say anything about back pain remedies but i can vouch for the tempur pedic i got mine when i fell off a ladder over a year ago and i was having difficulty with my hips and back pinching or "sticking" at night.. i don't know how to explain it but it was like my body would become stuck and it was very painful and i could hardly move. anyhow, a week on the tempur pedic and no more issues at all! i absolutely love it i am afraid i don't know the name of mine but it is one of the 10" thick models and i bought mine (cal king) 2nd hand for under $800. i know a lot of people would never buy a mattress second hand but to me it was not a problem. it was under a year old and the location and the people that were selling it were wonderful and i am very happy with it

best of luck to you in your recovery

I'm so happy to hear such great things about the tempurpedic. I am seriously thinking about going to get one on Monday. This bed is just not doing it for me anymore and I think I'm ready to take the plunge. Was the warranty for your bed transferrable even though it was second hand? I would have no problem buying a hardly used bed, especially for a cheaper price. Where did you get it?

And thank you for the recovery wishes! I will keep you guys updated

the warranty is transferable as far as i know, there is a date stamp on the mattress and apparently tempur pedic honors it for 20yrs from the date stamp. i called them to find out and that is what they said but i have not made any claims so i don't know for certain.

i found ours on craigslist i have the CL app on my cell phone so it alerts me whenever anything matches "tempur" (or basenji ) i am looking for a double now for my mom for our guest room preferably the kind that has the electronic adjustments

the 4 years no interest financing sounds very enticing too

That's awesome! I just looked at our CL and everyone of them is about 4-5 years old with the exception of one queen - but I think I want a king. If one popped up this weekend that would be awesome. Yeah if one doesn't pop of the 4-yr financing is a great deal, so I won't be too bummed I guess

Basenji!! I love them. So cute!!!!! Do you guys have one already?

tempur pedic Cloud, I am not sure about other info on it, it says easy-rest on the cover if that means anything. We bought it two? years ago on black Friday, I LOVE it and my husband does to but he's ready for something new every year to two years...

Cielo, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. It's awful. I broke my back when I was 18 years old (L1 lumbar). It sounds crazy but I haven't had any problems with my lower back since that. My upper back has problems though....not the same as yours I'm sure. I always sleep with a pillow between my legs & on my side. Sleeping does suck with back pain.

My sis had scoliosis & had to have metal rods put in her back to straighten her spine. I think she is in pain a lot of the time. I know she got a temper pedic bed & loves it too!

I think you should ask about physical therapy for sure! I'm hoping you feel better soon. Nothing worse than back pain

Yeah!! That is the one I want! How is the bed? Like is it soft but firm at the same time? Or is it more soft than firm? I want something in the middle. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you guys pay for yours?

Oh wow, lucky for your Erica! I'm so happy you don't have any problems with your lower back at least! Do you happen to know which model your sister has? I would love to get some real feedback on different models!

Yeah the more and more I think about it, I am kind of mad that my original surgeon didn't put me in physical therapy! Hopefully this new doc will think the same thing because obviously something isn't working!

It is soft and firm. We have it on the floor without frame or boxspring. I think this is weird but I noticed WITH the protective cover on it under the sheet it's more firm than without. I refuse to take the cover off though. We paid 1200 or 1400 on black friday and it was 4999. We bought two cover at 150 each but discounted to 50 included in that price...the guy said he gave us HIS employee discount as well when we went in there.

If you look on craigslist for one be very careful with bedbugs and do research on the bed you buy!

^ i was super worried about buying 2nd hand just for that reason but apparently the bed bugs cannot penetrate/hide in the foam mattresses

and def splurge on the special mattress covers, they are expensive but worth it
