Treatment for Migraines

I know there was a thread opened up but it's almost a couple of years old so I didn't want to bump it This was my first time with this neurologist and she prescribed me Topomax as a preventive med. I dislike take any new medicine or any type of prescriptions because I always think I'm going to end up with a sick stomach She wants me to go up on my dose every week until I reach a 100mg. I was also prescribed some other med just in case I do get a migraine while on the Topomax but I can't remember the name of it. All I can remember is that it's supposed to dissolve in your mouth. I really would prefer just taking a medicine when I get a migraine instead of having to take a pill every single day Has anyone ever taken Topomax before? If so, how was it for you? Did you experience any major side effects? Did you find that another preventive medicine work better for you? I know that everyone is different but just trying to get an idea of what to expect or either a different type of med that I can ask my doctor about just in case this one doesn't work out. I've also spoken to some people that says acupuncture works really well for them.

Thanks in advance

I've taken Maxalt for years with good results. It comes in a tab (dissolving) or pill form. I've never taken Topomax. I've tried a lot of different natural things, like ginger tea and changing my diet, which do help, but not completely.

For me at least, exercising daily and avoiding processed food and caffeine has reduced the number and frequency of my migraines, but I still get some.

I've never taken Topamax, but years ago I took sibelium for prophylaxis treatment of migraines. It didn't last too long. I had some weight gain, and I still found myself getting migraines enough that it didnt' seem worth it, so I stopped. No other really negative side effects for me though.

I've had a few medecations that I've taken for immediate relief. I had Maxalt the longest, but when I finished school (before getting a job with benefits) I couldnt' afford it. It was very expensive. It was very hit or miss for me, as it would have to be taken immediately when I noticed symptoms starting, and I woudl rarely have the pills on me at the time. During my last visit to my Dr, he gave me some new samples of Zomig to try instead. They also dissolve under the tongue, I haven't had a chance to really try them out yet. I suspect I'll have the same problem with taking them at onset of symptoms.

Keeping a consistent sleep schedule helps me. My Dr. suggested Acupuncture, and I'm considering Botox, because I squint a lot in the sun and I notice that leads to a lot of pain. I've also suspected for years that it might have something to do with my teeth.
Honestly, I could not get by without Tylonol 3. I dont' take a lot of them, but they are sometimes the only thing that will give me some relief from the pain other than going to emerg and getting a shot in the ass (but usually they wanna hook my up to IV's for a couple of hours, which have always been useless). It's my last resort, but it's a lifesaver.

Maxalt is the other one that I was prescribed. They gave me the trial box in the office so if it does work I wonder how much it will cost me. The Topomax was only $6 and the pills are tiny. I get nervous when taking big pills so I guess the smallness of these pills will calm my nerves some. Not for sure how big the 100mg pills are since they had to order them. I'm going to start the Topomax tomorrow just because I didn't want to start in the middle of the week. I was given Imitrex in the past but it didn't agree with my stomach so I resorted back to taking Goody Powders, which I have taken for years. I find that the heat and stress will trigger my migraines the most and of course when I don't eat anything. If I can just get them under control then that would be great. For the past couple of months I've had to go to the ER so that they can give me an injection to help me.

Maxalt can be costly, depending on your insurance. The pill form is really small. Apparently it makes some people sleepy, but that never happened to me. The best advice my doctor gave me was to keep it with me at all times. You never know when you will need it, and if you don't take it right away it may not work. I used to take another medicine too, but after years of learning to recognize my triggers and eliminating what I can, it's been much better. I still get stress migraines, but doing yoga every morning has done wonders in terms of how much calmer and more ready for my day I am.

Hope you feel better soon!

My husband had cluster headaches and during his last episode, he was rx'd Maxalt and so far, its the ONLY medication that helps to get rid of his headaches. We stocked up on it since my insurance only covers 6 pills per month since its a step medication and not on tier 1 or 2 of our formulary. My husband gets his headaches every 2 yrs or so and they started again on Sunday. I'd love to see if my husbands neuro would put him on some preventative meds. We think his trigger is a steep infection. :-( Good luck with your decision and I hope you get some relief. Oh, when my husband has his headaches, he carries the Maxalt with him; it usually takes the edge off in about 30 minutes.

I had awful side effects with Topamax. Of course, everyone responds differently to medicine.

In the 2 months I was on it, I lost a significant amount of weight, experienced tingling and numbness in my limbs and food and drinks tasted differently. To the point, I eliminated soem favorites from my diet.

I also used Maxalt and had good luck with it, so long as I took it the moment I felt a headache coming on.

I was prescribed Zomig for my migraines. This also is pill form and disolves in your mouth. The side effects are minimal and for me the most prominant was the throat swelling/pressure which lasted about 20 minutes after taking a dose. The migraine would be gone just as quickly though. The dosage is taken at the first onset of a migraine, (and works only if taken before it is a full blown one). 2 dosage max within 24 hours, although I personally have never needed another within that time frame. The max dosage is 3 per MONTH. For me, the migraines seem to be hormonal and closely match my cycle, so this works for me, but for more frequent headaches throughout the month, I take 3 Excedrin Migraines and I swear by them!

Best of luck to you! Headaches SUCK!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and responses. I love the fact that the Topomax pills are small to swallow and I'm really hope it works out with these. I'm still at 25 mg a day. Next week I'm supposed to up it to 50 mg but I'm not for sure if I really want to or not. I already have little small freak me out attacks just taking the one pill so we'll see.

I get really bad headaches as well. I need to look into this medicine. I always end up taking an Excedrin and just waiting it out.

i, too, have horrible migraines.. usually about 2-4/month. they were adult onset around the time i got pregnant with my first baby... we thought hormonally bc worse when pregnant or nursing(with all three of mine) but still same frequency/severity.so more likely, just hereditary/genetics bc my mom, aunt, cousin etc are all migraine sufferers.

i have tried maxalt which has worked inconsistently. i have not tried topamax but my mom and cousin, who also suffer from migraines, have been on topamax (started at 25 mg and upwards to more but i am not sure how much??) they both lost a lot of weight on it and it helped but not long term so they are both off of it now bc it got to the point that the side effects were worse than the migraines.

i have used butabital prn which is fiorcet. it usually works pretty well for me most of the time especially if i take it early enough. if i dont take it (or maxalt) early enough i am pretty incapacitated for most of day.

dandrea-- glad the topamax is going well so far and hope you have cont good results.
