Another jaw thread

I was eating SweeTart hearts y'day, and crunched down on one, only to have my jaw start to hurt. I'm taking ibuprofen, which is helping, but if I were to put "something" on it, should I use ice or heat? TIA!

I would try heat first. Cold may aggravate it further. Any swelling? If not, heat is the way to go.

Are you sure is not a fractured teeth?, one of my teeth was broke a time ago and the hurt was similar to a jaw problem, I think is better that you go to the dentist as soon as possible.

And about meds for me Naproxen works better that Ibuprofen, but better you ask to the dentist.

Describe the pain to me (sharp, dull, hurts to touch, radiating or pin point, top/bottom, anything that makes it worse, etc)

Pam, it's just a dull ache. Centered on the joint on the right side, but radiates into the upper molars on that side. I have fillings up there, but I checked with a mirror and LED light last night, and didn't see anything that looked out of place. Ibuprofen helped last night, but it was sore again this morning, whether it be from the meds wearing off or I slept on the right side and put pressure on it, I don't know.
If I happen to rest the left side of my jaw in my left hand while on the computer, it makes the pain a bit more (still on the right side, though).

Sounds like just a TMJ strain and should resolve with NSAIDs and rest (no hard or chewy foods, no foods that make you open greater than the width of 3 fingers) in a few days (resting your hand on the other side is deviating your jaw slightly laterally on the opposite side, pushing on the strained muscles and disc), but to be a little more sure, you can take something like a pencil or a baby carrot works pretty well (we use little plastic or wooden bite sticks in the office) and place it on the surface of each molar and bite down gently and hold the pressure for a few seconds. A cracked tooth will generally result in a quick shot of pain, often on RELEASE of the biting pressure. Small fractures you definitely wouldn't be able to see anything grossly wrong looking in the mirror yourself.

Thanks, Pam. I tried the biting down (using a pen, since it's what was closest at hand) with no sharp pain. I bought a bottle of naproxin this morning, I'll start taking that once the ibuprofen wears off.
