PMS

Every month I get the worst PMS. I get uncontrollably tired, and I'm hungry all the time. I very rarely nap, but I have napped the past two days. I also get cramps so bad I can't get out of bed. I take Midol which helps somewhat, but I would like to know if you ladies have any ideas of anything else I can do.

I'm sorry your feeling bad, I know how you feel. I hate my vajayjay sometimes!!! Tired, nauseous, bloating, cramps, back pain, etc...

I find for the cramps ibuprofen AND a heating pad works wonders. The heating pad is like my savior. I don't know what to do about the fatigue, I can't overcome it either. Are you on BC? I know some women find their periods are milder when they are on BC. I don't like BC pills, so I suffer. If your cramps are bad enough, your GP might prescribe you some muscle relaxers of pain pills.

I know how you feel...my PMS is hell. Like Char, I use ibuprofen. I have read that if you start taking it a few days before the PMS actually starts, it can help with cramps.

One other thing that helps cramps is sex, I don't know why...something to do with the uterine contractions.

The pill can help, but I don't take it, so I just deal with it.

Steph I'll have to try taking ibuprofen next time. I hadn't thought of that.

Char, thanks so much for the heating pad suggestion!

I'm like both of you. No BCP for me. I've tried it in hopes it would help with feeling like hell, but my body couldn't handle taking it

It does make me feel a little better to know that I'm not the only one who feels like this though

Also, If your body is tired then just nap because there is nothing wrong with that...that is what I do when I can. The 4 year old does not allow me to though (sigh).

i take bcp and that's reduced my pms greatly.

but before i took it, i took ibuprofen or midol (lifesaver!) and the heatpad was my saviour too :P

definitely, just take a nap , and if you can, sleep earlier than usual because i usually sleep an hour or so more than usual because of the fatigue.

BC is my savior for PMS. The whole reason I went on it in the first place was because i would get HORRIBLE cramps, cold sweats, and just overall have a terrible time during my period lol. I wasn't even having sex yet when i first went on BC. I'm scared to go off it now because I'm afraid my PMS symptoms would come back and that would be hell lol. I still get the occasional cramps, sometimes a headache, but they are nowhere near as bad as they used to be. I do however still get grumpy and mean hahaha. for cramps, i would just take advil and try to go to sleep. i heard drinking pure cherry juice helps but no idea if that's true lol. with the BC and your body not being able to handle it, have you only tried one kind or a bunch of kinds? they are all different IMO and your body could react differently to one over another.

seriously that makes me hurt just thinking of having sex in that state. perhaps that's because my cramps feel like they're in my cervix and nope, nothing is coming near that sucker when i have my period or cramps.

i take ibuprofen as well and it helps, as does exercising lightly; luckily i don't have too many issues though. i tend to get migraines though, so that's a whole different ballgame.

^lol, I just read it somewhere...take it up with Glamour or Cosmo or something. It actually does help, imo, but if you already feel like crap, it usually ain't gonna happen.

You're right about exercising too, I think that definitely takes the edge off.

The sex does help and I'm usually aroused during that time anyway.

Sex also helps me start my period, like if I'm late...a good shag always gets the flow going I know TMI.

I tried a few different kinds; I spent about 2 years trying to find one that worked. I finally gave up because I was nauseous all the time, my emotions were crazy, and I just didn't feel like myself.

Me too! My pms is horrible, and when my period starts it goes away, so I'm always trying to get it to start.

LOL! My boyfriend hates when I make him I wish my PMS would go away after it starts. Usually the first day or two is the worst, but after that it is fine.

my pcp back in hs put me on bc for my cramping, which would keep me out of school for days. i took 3 packs then a week off, so i only got my period 4 times per year. i switched to seasonale a few years later, which has worked great. i hardly cramp or have any sx, and my period only lasts for a couple days. it probably took a year to get used to, tho. those sticky heating pads used to help a ton, tho. i could actually function while using them (thermacare?)

i, too, have awful pms.. migraines, cramping, feeling so tired no words can describe. so i can totally sympathize. i take high dose ibprofen which seems to help (for the cramps). usually, after day two of starting, i feel much better.amber, haven't heard of seasonale but will look at it is midol better/does it give more relief than ibprofen? or about the same?

Ibuprofen, plenty of water, and heat pads get me through my period. I dread my periods. They're brutal. I get the most terrible cramps, I'm ridiculously irritable, and I'm always tired. My entire downstairs area even hurts in the beginning so sex is just out of the question.

Steph, you're right.
Menstrual cramps results from having high levels of prostaglandins, which may cause contractions, in the uterus. So basically, anything that prevents the production of these prostaglandins will prevent cramps. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen will all prevent prostaglandin synthesis but they need to be taken several days before menses in order for it to have effect. Once the prostaglandins are there though, there isn't much you can do about it other than preventing more from forming.

The low energy and increased appetite results from a hormone produced after ovulation called progesterone. It is basically preparing you for pregnancy and telling you to eat, store fat, and get your body ready for a baby. It sucks we're programmed to always be prepared to reproduce.

its kinda one of those things that depends on the person. if you prefer tylenol to ibuprofen, midol would be better (contains Acetaminophen, caffeine, Pyrilamine maleate). since midol does contain 500mg acetominophen, you need to be careful not to od (acetominiphen toxicity). For ibuprofen, i believe the highest recommended daily mg is 2400 (4 tabs x 200mg/tab x 3/day).

I have horrible cramping, nausea, back aches, fatigue, mood swings etc during my period. Some days I cannot get out of bed. What I find hilarious is that I still get all these symptons when my body produces practically no progesterone and I do not ovulate. (even when I'm not taking BC) This BC I am on right now is an absolute nightmare. I've gained 17lbs and it hasn't helped my periods or cramping much. I'm supposed to take it b/c my estrogen levels are so low. Anyone else on high dose estrogen BC pills and having bad experiences?

IMO You are having that because you are throwing your body into estrogen dominance , taking unapposed estrogen & no progesterone. Your hormones need to be balanced out. I was having the same problems & now use progesterone cream. Freaking Fabulous!!

I recommend reading anything by John R. Lee M.D. the man was a hormone genius

Yes, the family took over after his death. I highly recommend his books, all sources are stated there There are too many Dr's around that just aren't keeping up on this stuff, thankfully my gyn isn't one of them.

Me too, on all three accounts. Sorry everybody

ETA: I'm not on BC either because I don't have insurance and I'm not super comfortable with putting hormones in my body on a daily basis (more so the latter, obviously). I have to catch my cramps before they start or else I'm screwed so I take ibuprofen two days leading up to when I think its going to be. I usually feel bloated and I can feel mini cramps so thats how I know. As for the eating a lot part, I try to keep healthy snacks around me so if I want to eat at least it will be carrots and hummus instead of Doritos

I guess I'm lucky I get nauseated the days leading up to and during my period, I hardly eat anything. I found this ginger and lemon tea a month ago and it really helps with the nausea.
