Skin Hurts

My boyfriend has been complaining of his skin hurting for the past 2 weeks. It is on his lower back, butt, and legs. He describes it as like when you get sick and your skin hurts to touch, it cringes in pain if I lightly touch it. It seems to have came out of no where. He went to the doctor today and they ran a bunch of tests that all came back negative, then they prescribed him muscle relaxer and said if it becomes worse come back.

The pharmacist said it sounds like the beginning signs of shingles, but he doesn't have any other symptoms besides his skin hurting. We ran a google search and it seems like other people had these symptoms as well but no one ever had answer. Another possibility is fibromyalgia?

Anyone have anything similar to this?

When my hips go out of whack I actually don't get a whole lot of joint pain, but my butt, thigh, and lower back skin will get tender, almost like it is bruised. It will actually be painful to sit on it. So I would suggest that it could be caused by some sort of misalignment that he is not aware of. I go to a chiropractor who is a little more holistic, he doesn't pop any bones, he just shifts the muscles to persuade the bones back into alignment. I recommend this if you don't see someone already.
With that in mind, my grandmother has shingles and her first outbreak started with sore skin. Is it too late for him to try to get a vaccine? Her Dr. told her that shingles can be brought on by elevated stress, if he has been really stressed lately perhaps it may be shingles .
Good luck finding a diagnosis, and best wishes for a speedy recovery .

Thank you Jenny. His Dr. is being a prick kind of right now and refuses to test for shingles because he is "certain" that there would be a rash by now. Obviously not considering everyone (including a few other medical professionals) have said otherwise. I just feel bad for him because in his hurting so badly.

Could be sciatica, chiropractor might help.

Two weeks sounds pretty long for prodromal stage of shingles, but I still wouldn't rule it out.

Hope he feels better soon. Let us know if you find out what's causing it.

Update; They gave him some nerve pain medicine (I'm not sure the name) As of now the pain has subdued to little pain then increases randomly, but he has an appointment with a neurologist soon. He is beginning to think it is a pinched nerve/slipped disk, as the pain is VERY similar to my friends dad who has a slipped disk that is pinching a nerve in his neck. We will see, I am just happy that he is feeling a lot better.
