Retinal Migraines

anyone have them? i do; they're very sporadic and spontaneous. i've tried isolating activity/diet/exercise to see when they occur, but i just can't figure it out. i'm not sure they're hormonal either; i've had them while pregnant, not pregnant, nursing, before i had kids at all...

i do have painful migraines too, but those ARE cyclical (they tend to come towards the end of my cycle.

anyone have experience with these? if so, have you found a cause? i become a bit clumsy when i have them; it feels like my eyes are *almost* crossing, but they're not...and it lasts for 5-10 minutes.

i've had an MRI and EEG done, thankfully both completely normal.

hmmm are you talking about the aura that you get visually before a full migraine?

The Migraine Aura

my vision in my left eye would suddenly do this then WHAM a full blown headache (i used to throw up and then i just felt tired). i would also experience some numbness in my hand/fingers/sometimes into my face...it varied. these started during college at 22 and lasted for about 10 yrs or so.

anyway i read this could be hormonal/diet/stress related. so i tried to track each migraine. they usually occured while i was ovulating. i also read that these types of migraines are set off by low potassium levels (thus i ate more bananas) making the brain misfire and cause these auras. i mean theres something chemically that occurs with a migraine theres an imbalance somewhere. i know it happens to women more than men statistically speaking.

funny one day they just never came back, ive been migraine free for 3 years now...they are just gone and i cannot explain it. perhaps it was because i upped my potassium levels and started running seriously or perhaps my life is way happier than ive ever been in my life?

IDK im not complaining i guess since they are gone LOL

My dad has dealt with them for along time and had the same tests as you as well as tried medications. He'll have months where he has them everyday and then go a long time without them, but they've never figured out what makes that difference. I hear they're very tricky to link to a cause.

i don't know what would cause the retinal migranes but your other migranes could be related to increased water retention at the end of your menstrual cycle, which could increase your systemic blood pressure.

back when i first started really having them, my neurologist wanted to put me on a mild anti-depressant (SSRI). i declined; my family is riddled with bipolar/depression. last thing i needed was to be put on meds i don't need.

with that said, i am actually going to start tapering myself off of the lexapro to see what happens. i at tired of being fat and being on it

I have dealt with horrible migrains (normal and retinal) off and on since I reached puberty and the only thing that has really helped, and actually almost stopped them completely (knock on wood!) is to take certain vitamins and super low dose of depression/anti anxiety medicine. I have taken fluoxetine and nortriptyline in super low doses (like 1/4 of the lowest perscribed dose for actual depression/anxiety). I have taken both for years (not at the same time) and had no side effects or weight gain.

Also my migraine doctor suggested to take magnesium and riboflavin (vitamin b-3) daily and it helps a lot. This might be something to ask your doctor about if you don't want to try the perscription route.

this is what i was going to say. about 4 years ago i use to get terrible migraines behind/in my eyes just above the bridge of my nose but they didn't last only 10 minutes, it just never went away... for over 6 months... i had the MRI, MRA etc and all negative but the pain was just awful and would not go away so i dont know if it is the same thing (i didn't know there was a specific name till just now ) docs put me on lexapro 10 mg a day for a couple of years that worked for me. i weaned myself off and now when i feel one coming on (stress related for me) i will take only 2.5 mg lexapro and it goes away within about 2 hours doctors all say it is a placebo effect and that the dose is too low to do any good and that it takes a while for it to build up in your system so it couldn't work but.. whatever it is.. it works for me and that is all that i care about

oh, i almost forgot another thing that worked for me was botox injection right between the eyebrows, it took a few days to work, but my headache was gone for a couple of months after that that's when we figured out it was stress related, i was squinting and pinching those muscles together all the time and that triggered it for me.

sorry this is happening to you Shi
