| | | I've never taken yaz but many women do gain weight with a lot of BC pills. Just to let you know, there have been a ton of articles lately about lawsuits against Yaz. Apparently a lot of women are having major side effects such as stroke, DVT(deep vein thrombosis), PE (pulmonary embolism), liver disease and even heart attack. Obviously all of these are possible with any BC pill but I guess from what I've read the percentage is very high with this specific pill.

| | | ^ yep, the hospital I'm doing my rotation at had a healthy 21 year old come in with a MI and they're linking it to Yaz.

| | ^ Yeah I've heard about all the lawsuits, and according to my gyno that was the old Yaz pill and supposedly they re-did it so it wouldn't have those effects? is that not true?
About lo-estrin..That is what I took before Yaz, for about 3 or 4 months and it made me have really bad spotting and stomach cramps. My gyno said that the estrogen levels must be too low for me or something.
ETA: Also I've been have insane migraines lately, could this be because of the Yaz?

| | I've taken Ortho Tri-Cyclen for 13 years of my life and have never had any problems. My skin is clear and I don't have any spotting and my periods are light and only 2 or 3 days long. Without the pill I bleed like crazy. If you want to research Yaz and see if they changed the formula check to see if it has drospirenone in it...that is what is or was causing all the problems...it's a dieuretic which causes hyperkalemia (high potassium). This is what was the cause for the other problems, at least from what I have read...I'm not a doctor, just a little nursing student

eta again: skyy, everything lynne mentioned in the above post is correct about what to be careful for with yaz!!

| | Thanks for the advice guys...I was literally about to get on Yaz in a week. Have any of you tried Seasonique, or is that one bad news as well? I get HORRIBLE cramps and heavy periods but I'm afraid of all of the potential side effects |

I'm 32 with 3 kids so it's tough but it's so inspiring. It makes me view my life in a different light every day.

It was very good for my period regulation, but it killed my sex drive. I'm sure it doesn't do that to everyone though.

I switched from a regular dose pill to a low dose, and I haven't had a full on period in 5 months now. Just light spotting for a day or two, its great. |

| | I don't I just feel like I've gained a bunch of weight, and I haven't changed anything at all..I eat the same, exercise the same amount ect. That particular low dose brand of BC doesn't work for me..
I have the same thing as Natalie, heavy periods, awful cramps. Yaz relieved those but I don't really know. I also have insane mood swings too
Does anyone have any other recommendations? I know everyone is different, but its nice to know whats out there.

| | I'm on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and so far its worked the best for me. I've tried Aleese, Ortho Tri Cyclen and another one I can't remember the name of that made me vomit everyday The lo dose ones seem better for me since I get sick easily.

| | | I've been on Yasmin for 8 years straight (now I'm on generic, Ocella); no weight gain, no mood swings, nothing.
In my opinion - it's tricky to blame wt. gain and other s/e on only one thing (in this case, Yaz), you really have to control for OTHER variables in order to get to the bottom of it. I.e. lifestyle, genetics, other meds...

If I want it to stop i'll just go off and have my period early. I feel like there are so many options that something hopefully works for everyone. that's just being optimistic, i guess. Oh, and my favorite thing about it is I get to choose when to have my period to avoid having it on vacation, during exams, etc |

| | I gained 10+ pounds on Yasmin and while I want to go on BC again I'm scared to After I got off of those pills I've maybe lost about 5 pounds...but I never got back to my original weight. It definitely was the BC because during the time I was taking Yasmin, I ate the same, exercised the same, etc.
I considered going on Yaz but this thread has me scared

i haven't ever tried anything else because i'm scared lol. Not even Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo ... which, for some reason, pharmacists always want to try to give me instead I don't know if it's better or something?
i think there's been other posts about BC and weight gain though.... but I was always taught and told by docs that they don't have anything to do with one another, it just happens that when you initially go on the BC your body's changing anyways or something and you'd most likely gain weight regardless |

| | | Everyone should keep in mind that everyone's body is different and what birth control works well for you won't always work well for everyone else. You really can't predict the way your particular body chemistry will react with it, so choosing birth control methods based on biochemically-related factors like weight gain, moodiness, period flow, etc that others experience won't ensure that it's actually the best method for you, or that it wouldn't work for you.

| | | I've been on Yaz for a year and a half - no problems whatsoever! No weight gain at all, here. I read lots of scary reviews of Yaz before I started taking it and I was very skeptical of it. One of my friends started losing a lot of hair not long after she started taking it, which really scared me. I personally haven't had any issues with it. It really just depends on your body; if one pill doesn't work, there are plenty more to try. My one complaint is that I initially took Yaz to reduce cramps and it has not lessened them at all.

| | | I was on Lo Ovral for the last 5 years or so and had no problems. I know a lot of people experience extreme weight gain when taking it though. I had a sudden extreme drop in my estrogen level and no one could tell me why, so my doctor suggested I switch BC.
I'm on to the Nuva Ring now and love it. Estrogen is still low, so I figure it has more to do with my work environment than the Lo Ovral. I'd suggest either one based on my personal experience.
ETA: I'm sooo forgetful that the Nuva Ring is a godsend. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
