Rhinoplasty

Has anyone had this done that could shed some light of the recovery process? I am getting it done at the end of feb and am so nervous (it is my face afterall) and its one cosmetic procedure that I dont know anyone who has ever gone through it so I have no one to ask. Any info is much appreciated

Sorry, I am no help with recovery time but this is the one plastic surgery that I would really consider. My nose is

But just wanted to say that I hope it goes well for you and your recovery time isn't too bad!

I had a friend who had one done. She didn't leave the house for 2 weeks because both eyes had shiners from the procedure.

Post recovery though, she was always very happy she had it done.

I didn't have rhinoplasty, but I did have my nose rebroken after I broke it and it healed crooked (they're pretty much the same recovery process - I think the doctor even shaved a little bit off of my nose for free!).

I'm not going to lie, it's pretty brutal. They put stuffing in your nose and it goes all the way up to the top of your nasal cavity, and they put gauze under your nose to catch the blood runoff. After 2 or 3 days you have to have the gauze removed, which feels like you're giving birth through your nose. My nose was stuffed up for weeks afterward. I got 2 black eyes despite the fact that I used ice and kept my head elevated. The painkillers are nice, but since I wasn't eating much, they made me throw up, so I had to use an anti-nausea suppository (which was quite a surprise when I picked up the prescription at the pharmacy). If painkillers normally make you sick, be sure to ask your doctor for some type of anti nausea meds. I would say it was about 2 weeks until I looked normal again, and about 6-12 months before I stopped feeling like my nose was completely fragile and made of glass. Feel free to PM me or respond here if you have any more specific questions.

I had it done.

I had my primary Dec. '05 as well as a revision done July '07 as the healing didn't go as well as planned from the primary surgery. There was a lot of scar tissue build up in the tip area that caused the swelling to not go down. Surgery #1 was an open procedure and #2 was a closed one.

Both times I didn't leave my apartment for a week until the split came off my face. After that I had bruising, but not that much swelling. Ice packs were my best friend. I have known and heard of women that didn't give a damn and would leave their house, split and all, not caring who saw their face in that state.

As of today, I couldn't be happier with the final result. Yes, I am 2.5 years post-op, but depending on your skin type the healing process can take a year or more. In my case, I have thick skin, so it's the longest healing process out there for rhinoplasty. Oh, I should also mention that after my revision I did go back to my PS every season for follow up appointments. At some of them he would inject my nose with a kenalog steroid shot to break down the swelling. Yes, an injection into the deepest tissue in your nose is not fun, but it was all worth it in the end. I had no side effects from the shots, and the results of them are really amazing, IMO.

OP, is there anything in particular you're wondering about? Feel free to PM me.

^I think you're real cutie pie

I went back and forth for years before deciding to finally do it. I know the feeling of hating your nose and picking it apart for different things.

I honestly felt it was the one feature that ruined my face. Everything else I was happy with, and I still feel that way today.

Maureen, I think your nose is lovely! I don't think that's a large hump, and a nose is SUPPOSED to stick out It's not like *some* noses I've seen *cough, cough, my ex-BF*
Oddly enough, I have a little, bitty bump on my nose, and I never realized it until a few years ago Really, how often does one have the chance to see their face in profile? I finally noticed it when we put a new medicine cabinet in, if I remember correctly LOL I was like, OMG, how in the world did it take my over 25 years to realize I have a bump there????? Meh, it's there, it's me, it's fine LOL
But I would never presume to judge anyone who chooses to have rhinoplasty My biggest body issues is my chest (or lack thereof!), but b/c I am such a scaredy-cat, I would never get augmentation.

I agree. I may be a newb to AF, but I've been around the block a 100 times. Your nose is great and your eyes are gorgeous. Everything works. You appear to be a lovely young woman and should be happy mother nature blessed you as much as she did.

i have debated a nose job for yearssssss... i probably have the worst nose on this forum hands down ahah. my whole family has big ones though. i don't think i could ever do it though, considering i'm terrible with doctors, hospitals, etc. and hey, this is who I am i guess.

My cousin had hers done about a year ago though. Hers was massive and weird shaped and she probably got the worst nose of the family haha. anyways, i don't know too much about her proceedure but I do remember that about a week after she had it done, she had the bright idea of washing her hair in the sink (you know, head upside down...). BAD IDEA. all the blood rushed to her head and caused major bruising and black eyes. so yeah, don't do that lol.

the overall appearance of her nose now is better than before, but to me it still looks funny... like not a real nose. she went to the top doc here too that was referred by the doctor who did ashlee simpson's nose (she initially tried to get him, but he was booked up for years).

good luck though, you're much braver than I am!!!

I'm actually having a septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and fracture repair done in March. The doc I'm going with doesn't use packing and says his patients need 6 days of recovery on average. We'll see...

^ Are you getting submucous resection done for the turbinate reduction? If yes, please update sometime when you are healed on the results. I had turbinate cauterization done a couple years ago but they grew back so I've been looking into other options.

I had the turbinate reduction and a deviated septum fixed. I didn't have any problems other than an occasional bloody nose. I had packing in my nose for two full days and slept sitting upright for two weeks. Every week I had to have my sinus cavities cleared. They kept getting congested badly. That for me was the worst. But I can breathe so much better now and don't have to breathe out of my mouth at night. I am so glad I had it done, personally.

I had my procedure yesterday. So far the recovery isn't bad at all! I'm definitely congested, which is a bummer, but it's pretty nice to not have the packing in my nose - I'm barely bleeding at all so it wouldn't have been necessary.

I'm very fair-skinned so I have a couple of shiners that are pretty cute, haha. But other than that, I'm not having adverse reactions to the pain meds and I'm just drinking a lot of fluids and keeping my head elevated. I'd definitely recommend to anyone to try and find a doc who doesn't use packing - as mine explained, except when patients are HEAVY bleeders (who apparently aren't many), as long as the incisions are stitched up properly, there is no reason for packing; in fact, the packing in a lot of cases can actually inflame the stitches even more because of friction. Also, I had a closed procedure, which really reduces inflammation and scarring as well.

You know, he didn't specify what he did exactly, but from the way he described it it sounded like the submucous reduction. When I go in for my next check-up I'll ask.

Maureen - I think the only opinion that matters is YOURS.

I personally think you are very pretty, and don't need to do anything to your nose, but it is what YOU think that counts.

My BFF had her nose done when she was 18. She thought it looked too "ethnic", and she was very unhappy with it. She could not wait to be 18 and be able to do it. She did, and she had shiners and a swollen face for a while (she kind of looked like LaToya), but then everything stabilized, and she was and still is very happy she went through with it.

I thought her old nose had character, and her new one looked generic, but I did not have to have it on my face and be unhappy with it every day. She LOVES the result and he gained so much confidence, that I believe it was 100% worth it.

To anybody considering doing it - make sure you do your research well, and look at many before and after pics when you have a consultation with a surgeon.
