Ear Wax Removal

Anyone have any surefire ways to remove earwax? I use q-tips religiously after my showers, but for some reason, it's been awful lately! It's affecting my hearing...so any suggestions would be really appreciated!

I've tried debrox drops and all that does is get trapped in there & makes it worse.

you can get your ears candled.

how do you know you don't have an ear infection?

as a kid i had terrible earwax.

one way is to put tiny drops of oil (baby oil works) in the ear canal (over a few days to soften the wax) then use that rubber bulb syringe (fill it with tap water) and flush it out. put the water in, then lean over and let the water drain; the wax will come out with it.

then make sure your ear gets dried out; rubbing alcohol/hydrogen peroxide works quickly.

basically, you want to soften the wax, used forceful water (painlessly, of course), drain, and dry the canal.

Debrox works.. i use it for Zachary.
you just have to know how to use it correctly
after you've been using it for about a week, 2 times a day.. you need to get a syringe/plunger thingy.. fill it up with warm water.. and shoot it up your ear with your ear pointed downward.. you don't actually shoot it directly into your canal though.. you kind of aim it near the canal, but not directly in it of course (that could do damage) .. the water sort of ricochets and flows up there and loosens the ball of wax. you need to do it repeatedly until it comes out.
i'm a pro at this.

There is some stuff that you can use. It's like hydrogen peroxide but a different concentration (they have it at the drug store.) You put it in for 15 minutes and tilt your head so it stays in, then you use a syringe like Nola was describing to flush it out. That works really well.

I used to have to go to the dr all the time to have them irrigated because they would get so plugged, so if your at home treatments don't work, a quick trip to the dr and they will get it all out for you.

My doctor always told me not to use q-tips because it shoves the wax in further, but I haven't had to have them irrigated since I started using q-tips. I always do the q-tips right out of the shower because the wax is softer and is harder to shove futher into your ear canal.

Good luck, I know how you feel, it's so annoying when ears are plugged up.

OMG. Thank you guys SO much! I already have compromised hearing from lots of ear infections as a kid) so this is REALLY irritating!

Vik: I guess I never thought of whether I had an ear infection. Nothing hurts though. Is there a possibility of me having one without pain?

Shi, Nola & Steph...I will have to try one or all of your methods...I should def do the irrigation. Vik...never tried the candle thing, but I've heard of it working. I really just want to go to the dr & have them get it all out once & for all!

I think now that they are plugged, of course q-tips are not helpful...at least in the really bad ear. In the other (good ear) it's good for now.

Again. THANK YOU SO MUCH...I'll update when I get some relief.

it's possible to have an ear infection with no pain, especially if it's just developing.

i hope you get relief asap, and no more q-tips!

You could also have a retracted ear drum, which feels like wax and can also be part of an infection. It will almost always be diagnosed as an infection by non-ENTs. I have a lifetime of ear infections and tubes due to a congenital deformity in my ear canals. My right ear is probably legally deaf.

Anyhoo, When that happens, I use Afrin. About 6 hours after my first treatment of Afrin, I begin to attempt to pop my ears (squeeze the nose method). It can take me up to 24 hours to get them both to pop. Just use the Afrin as directed until you get it/them to pop. Once you get them to pop, the hearing returns instantaneously, but you'll have to make sure they stay popped. If there is any infection and/or fluid in there, it will clear in about 24 hours after you get them popped.

However, if you suspect they are severely infected, you will need to do this treatment in conjunction with antibiotics. I have only had them so bad that I needed antibiotics once (and ended up with a tube in my bad ear because nothing would clear it). Some doctors will do this treatment with something prescription such as Nasonex, but my doctor just uses Afrin as it is just as effective (but cannot be used longer than 72 hours). The idea is to return air flow to your eustacian tube. The airflow reduces fluid, allowing infection to clear if present.

This treatment was prescribed to me by my ENT Dr. It isn't something I made up, LOL

Wow, Dawn! That's some good advice too...but I'm pregnant, and I don't think I can use Afrin & I want to avoid using antibiotics at all costs. I got some baby oil, some hydrogen peroxide & a syringe, so I will have my husband help me flush them out over the next couple of days. Hopefully that will work. I kindof think it's just wax because when I pull down on my bad ear, I can hear So it's like it's just plugged. Thank you for the suggestions though...good to know just in case all of these other things don't work.

is there an echo in here?

Anne, I hope you get relief asap. I too am all for natural solutions, especially when pregnant. As you know, there are many safe antibiotics for pregnancy should it come to that. Let's hope it doesn't.

Hey guys!
So....I let that baby oil sit in my ear for a good 15-20 min, then my husband used...get this...a blood pump () to irrigate both ears. It worked! At least for now...it still closes up a bit, but I think that is more due to the water now than the wax. We're going to follow up the next couple of nights, then do it like once every couple of weeks to keep it clear. I also swabbed the outer part with hydrogen peroxide to dry it out.

Can't thank you enough...living life in stereo again is very nice Hopefully it will last!

^Yay! So glad you're feeling better! Usually some water will stay in your ears for a couple hours after you do it. You can lie on your side with a towel under your ear so it will drain.

If you feel good tomorrow, no need to repeat unless you're still feeling plugged.

glad youre feeling better! I spent the better part of this year with ongoing ear issues like youve described, no fun! My dr ended up giving me decongestants and a nasal spray.. and long term tubes. Im still having problems, but not nearly as bad.. just ringing now

Ive found in the last couple of years, using qtips to make it worse! so now after showers, I use a kleenex and my finger to help dry my ears.. and clean them a bit.. its helped a lot. My husband hates that I wont keep qtips in the house now (if they are there Ill use them! )

So I am no help at all, but I am a compulsive ear cleaner. I go through a box of 1000 q tips in like a month. In second grade the boy who sat next to me always had crusty waxy ears and it grossed me out so much that I vowed to never let my ears get that way, lol.

The rubbing against the earcanal when you use a qtip in the ear stimulates the ear to produce even more wax, according to the specialist who takes care of one of our children. He's had massive ear infections and ruptured the same ear drum twice. Due to the infections and surgeries he's had lots of problem with wax and we were told not to use qtips but to flush instead.

My mom always told me not to use q-tips too. She used the round end of a bobby pin. I refuse though & still use q-tips.

We tried those candle jobbies from the health food store & they suck.
