Knee issue - Torn Meniscus

Has anyone ever done this? It appears at preliminary ortho exam I have torn my medial meniscus. An MRI will better determine the severity of the tear. I overtrained and have had issues with this knee for years, it finally gave way kickboxing on Saturday.

If you have torn your meniscus (lateral or medial) - what did your ortho suggest you do to repair? I'd like to avoid surgery, if possible. Obviously I will know more once the MRI takes place and results in hand but I am curious to know about recovery time, pain, etc.

Thanks in advance

I have had this surgery 3 X I tore my medial meniscus, fractured my patella (knee cap) and chipped my femur all in one during gymnastics practice my senior year of HS.
I highly suggest the surgery as it will NOT heal on its own because there is no blood supply to cartilage. The surgery takes about 30-40 minutes, has a quick heal time and the pain was minimal...only took a few tylenol to ease the pain. I could not imagine NOT having the surgery.
I was running in a college track meet 2 weeks after my last surgery. The reason I had 3 surgeries is due to them missing part of the tear (it was tucked underneath?). Well, then I compensated too much on my other knee and caused a small tear
So, I think you should do this ASAP.

aww thanks for replying so quickly! wow...3x!! may I ask, how long was the recovery for the surgery? Did they remove the medial meniscus or sew it back together? yes, ortho said the medial cannot heal because there is no blood supply...im so scared of never being able to run or kick box again post-surgery !

ETA: just noticed you said you were running 2 weeks later! WOW! I had heard at least 6-8 weeks no weight-baring exercise...thanks for the info...hopefully will know exactly what the diagnosis is this week! do you have any scars?

I did not have the stitching because he said it is much easier to re-tear. He said he removed about the size of my thumb nail.
I was on crutches about 7 days the first time because my knee was so swollen...not sure why? I did not see my knee cap for about 7 days. Got frustrated and switched doctors since my knee was still painful months later. His partner did the last 2 surgeries and I was amazed. I walked out of the hospital the last time with very minimal swelling and pain. I was walking fine w/in days and then ran the 800m in a college race 2 wks later. Not sure if I was supposed to, but I did

ETA- 3 little marks about 1cm each. Not noticable at all. I can't believe he said no weight bearing for 6-8 weeks. I am stubborn so maybe that has something to do with it hehe.

I have no advice but, i hope your knee gets better with the surgery!!
I have a knee that is a bit messed up but since i don't participate in any sports (except web surfing), it hasn't got worse.

Good luck. The MRI results usually take a week or so.
