NTI dental mouthpiece info??

My dentist thinks I might be having an issue with my TMJ. I have been having lots of popping on the right side of my jaw, almost daily headaches and soreness/tireness of my jaw. I am also a constant gum chewer and he says I will have to give that up. One of my front teeth is chipping and he says the rechipping might have something to do with my jaw getting misaligned. He has recommended that I get fitted for a NTI mouthpiece that I would wear when sleeping. Has anyone used one of these before and did you find that it helped?? Thanks for any info!

The NTI is a good appliance. It has pros and cons vs. a full arch nightguard. I'd say the main cons are that it is more easily broken by heavy grinders, and easier to unconsciously take out in your sleep.

Can't comment on your front tooth without knowing what your occlusion (bite) is like.

You definitely need to start in on a 'self-help' program though.... soft foods, limited opening (no large sandwiches, etc!), definitely no gum

I'm having a lot of popping noises and my doctor also thinks it is something to do with TMJ... I haven't gone to the dentist yet I'll keep an eye on this thread

Once I stopped chewing gum my TMJ got considerably more tolerable. I hate mints, but you get used to it.

You also have to ease up on, um...Oral sex I have a little guide with excercises and such to do as well that my physical therapist gave me that helps a lot.

Thanks for the info Pam, I am not a huge tooth grinder, so hopefully this will work. Just wanted to make sure it was a fairly good device before dished out the money.

Jess, I hate mints too, but guess I will have to get used to it. Glad to hear that might help a lot. As for the other, that is too damn funny, we'll see how my BF reacts when he hears that!

Be glad it isn't cracking, at least. It freaked me out when my jaw started cracking, and I just got through the diagnostic tests and the fitting for my nighttime mouthpiece (I think it's called PATend...?)

Anything to prevent my jaws from locking... *sigh*
