Topamax for Migraines?

So, I suffer from migraines and it just seems like nothing is working anymore and I'm so sick of it!!! I went to the doctor this morning and she presribed Topamax. I've really been wanting to try this but when I went to the pharmacy to pick it up it was $86!!! I told them I didn't want it, that seems like ALOT for a 1 month supply. Has anyone else tried Topamax and had good results? I'm just wondering if it's worth it for that much. I would hate to spend that much money and then it not work.

It did work for me, but not as much as I would have like.
Depakote (another anti-seizure med. that has just gone generic) works better for me and keeps them away.

Oh, and I just think this should be moved to the health and beauty section when someone gets a chance.

Canada stocks generic version of this medication. Perhaps you may be able to order from an accredited online canadian pharmacy. just make sure it's a real accredited canadian pharmacy, and not one posing as one.

I would try Relpax. I have had excellent results on it. It is the 4th medicine I have tried for migraines after Maxalt stopped working for me. It is still ridiculously expensive without insurance and I can only get a limited number of pills per month.
I've done research on Topamax and there seems to be a lot of really bad side effects (memory loss, inability to put thoughts into words.) How often do you get migraines?

I usually go about 1 week without them, then get them everyday for 3-4 days. I used to only have them once a month and they have just been out of control lately!

Well it's a daily treatment right? I'm in Canada, so our costs are different, but It seems that 86$ isn't too bad for daily med, if it works, no? A few of bucks a day, but maybe worth the pain relief. My Maxalt, if not covered, would have been much more then that for 6 pills. I've found all my migraine medication is very expensive without coverage. But these pills also work very different for different people, what may work for someone else may not work for you so I wouldnt' rely on that too much. I've sat in the ER and had a dr. give me an IV drip for an hour and had no change. It's really all trial and error.

My hubby has suffered from migraines for years, had them weekly. He was one of the guinea pigs they first attempted Topamax on years ago....and it did not work unfortunately. In addition, another member mentioned the side effect of not being able to put words together & memory loss; that was a HUGE side effect for him too! and it also made foods taste bad. I think doctors just try it if nothing else seems to be working. Now my husband simply has to take narcotics for the pain, maxalt stopped working too. I'm praying one day God will just heal him from all those terrible headaches!

i took topamax for a reason other than headaches and i had serious hallucinations. i thought i was spyro the dragon. seriously. i would lie on the couch and think i was ramming my head into things.

it is also prescribed for weight loss sometimes and i hear it works really well for that. my mom was kicking herself a few months after she flushed all of mine down the toilet.

Well, I just called the insurance to see if there were any other options and they told me about mail order. It is only gonna run me $40 for a 3 month supply. I really hope it works for me without any of the crazy side effects.

I've heard of people taking it for weight loss also. Some see results and others don't. I wouldn't mind it suppressing my appetite a little ( I love food )but really don't want to lose weight.

Thanks everyone for your replies!!

I was on topamax for a little while. It didn't help my headaches at all. I ended up losing quite a bit of weight and didn't need to. It can act as an appetite supressant. I tried quite a few things before they put me on inderal, which helped alot. I was able to actually go off of it.

I've never taken Topomax. I was prescribed Imitrax(sp) and it seemed to help my migraines but unfortunately I could not stomach the medicine and went back to taking OTC aspirin I got my first visit with a new neurologist next Wednesday so hopefully he'' give me something good. Migraines suck especially when you're having them on a daily basis

you know you don't have to buy all of the 30 day supply at one time. if you want to at least try it ask the pharmacy to give you a weeks supply. we do it in my pharmacy all the time. if you decide it works for you, then you can get the rest and $86 isnt bad.

this is illegal. and dont call your local pharmacy for advice when you need help. they have actual paying customers to help.

I just feel like $86 is alot when I could try something else that might work just as well for much less. I have the mail order prescriptions all set up now for only $40 for the 3 month supply. If this is something I'll be taking long term I would much rather pay the $40 every 3 months. I've never left a perscription that was filled for me without paying. I felt really bad doing so but I was completely unaware of how high it was going to be. We recently switched insurance companies and with the other one I knew it was going to run $22 a month and I thought it would be close to the same. Now if it doesn't work for me I'm only out half the money.

But considering it is a daily preventative prescription, wouldn't you need more then a one week trial? Wouldn't that be like trying a certain birth control or ani-depressant for one week?

Okay, another question. I got my Topamax. I've only taken 3 pills and am not liking the side effects. Is it too soon to tell? Should I continue taking them and see how I adjust or stop now? The first pill I just got woozy, the second I had no side effect, the third I felt extremely drunk. Three fingers on my right hand went numb, one on my left hand numb, could not think, had to just go to sleep for a few hours. I thought maybe I should just take it at bedtime for a few nights to get it in my system? I know I could not tend to my children feeling the way I felt today. My husband was home or I wouldn't have even tried it. Any opinions would be great!

I took topomax for migraines and it made me STUPID.
I can't believe it would be prescribed for weight loss given the known and very common side effects.
I'd definitely prefer being of my normal intelligence and a crippling migraine or two a month to being a skinny idiot who is headache free.

I would do your research on the drug and its side effects (pay attention to dosage linked to the effects) before you make a decision. That said, at my worst I only got 5 migraines a month so it might be a little different for you. Now I'm down to 1 every 2 months with diet and lifestyle changes.

Stupid is the exact word I used to explain what I felt to my husband. I would much rather have the migraines than feel like this. I just didn't know if this might stop after some time.

First of all, PLEASE call your local pharmacy for advice. Yes, I have paying customers I am there to help and my day can get stressful. But if ANYONE has any questions about medication, I hope I am there to help them take it safely.

And yes, these medications that were originally meant for seizures can have crazy side effects. If you are having the ones you mentioned, I would be concerned and would be contacting the doctor. Hopefully the Topamax was not the 1st line treatment your MD has tried? Have you tried any other types of medications yet, there has been good preventative treatment with beta blockers for migraines and using serotonin medications (imitrex, frova, axert, relpax) as well.

I had a bad experience with Topamax as well. It made my fingers numb and tingly. Everything I ate had a metallic taste to it so I lost weight and I felt completely out of it.
I'm now taking Frova as needed and it has worked really well for me.

Does anyone know of any long term effects? I'm taking 100mg and just hoping cutting down to 50mg might help? I guess I just need to call the doc in the morning, I was just really hoping this was going to work great for me

No prob, it can be hard to tell sarcasm online.

I get so sick of people thinking pharmacists are just pill counters, so just wanted to point out they can be great resource for information.

"what do you mean it will take 20 minutes? all you have to do is put a label on a bottle"

i just get irritated with the position that the insurance companies have forced us into. they try to cut costs by offering their own mail order scripts but refuse to offer any sort of customer service... but that is a whole other rant that i am sure you are well versed in.
