Lexapro

My doctor wrote me a script for Lexapro today...
I'm nervous to start taking it.
Does anyone have experience with this drug? Side effects?

My brother was given this by his doctor this and stopped taking it after a week, he said he didn't like the way it made him feel, it takes at least two weeks to get into your system. I have a friend that takes it as well she seems to be doing well on it.

^thanks for the help.

i know that everyone will respond differently, so i suppose the only way to know how it'll effect me is to just suck it up and take it...

I was on it for 4 years. Side effects for me:
-weight gain or at least strong sweet/carb cravings and appetite increase
-sleepy
-terribly difficult to wean off of. This medicine has a short half-life so you really cannot skip a dose without feeling the effects which include - severe dizzines, nausea, the runs, panic, dillusions, etc.
-It did seem to calm me a bit, but it also tempered my moods severly so that people wanted to know "waht happened to me"?
-I weaned myself off of it without a doc. Not smart. I did it within a week and had psycho-somatic side effects akin to a 4-day acid trip. So in other words - don't do it on your own. Have a doc help wean you off and give you something to counteract the quick loss of seratonin that lexparo helps regulate.

Not everyone experiences what I did, but you did ask my experience with it so there you have it . I know some people who are really happy with it and don't see a reason to get off of it. I just didn't want to be dependent on it any longer.

I had horrible side effects the couple months I was on it (this was 5 or so years ago):
Very, very tired - couldn't keep my head up at work
No appetite, lost 10 pounds in a month
Super sluggish and still depressed

Everyone reacts differently, some people do great on it.

I just started taking this. I've been on it for maybe 3 weeks.

I am sooooooooooooo tired, it is not even funny. My doctor said that it shouldn't make me tired, but when I told him I am really tired, he said that this will be the last "symptom" to go. I am feeling more motivated, but still not like myself.

Have I given this medication enough time? Should I try something else?

I'm on this and haven't had any of those side effects. Then again, the dose is very low. It's worked well for me!

my doctor says it takes AT LEAST 2 weeks to start feeling completely better. some people take up to 6 weeks. Give it some more time, if you're still not feeling better you should talk to your doctor and possibly try another SSRI out.

i've been on it for 2 days. obviously i'm not feeling any big changes yet. but, i have been feeling a little nauseous, but nothing too bad.

I got 6 weeks worth of samples and only have a couple pills left. I think my anxiety has gotten better, but I do feel a lot more drowsy. Even when I get a full 8 hours of sleep I get tired in the middle of the day and have to take a nap and then exhausted by midnight. Its good that I fall asleep easier, but I wish the daytime drowsiness would go away.
Does have withdrawal effects- even if skipped for a day I feel weird and shaky. I have heard lots of negative things about it causing weight gain, which is my main concern. I think I will keep taking it, though.

most SSRIs are totally YMMV...seriously. the drug that made your friend fat and sluggish might make you skinny and happy again.
And side effects usually take a few weeks to subside, but if it's been a month and they are still bugging you, you might want to switch. Sometimes changing the timing of when you take your pill can help with the drowsiness.

I've never been on Lexapro, but have taken my fair share of SSRIs

i take it but only the lowest dose..and it has helped a lot of my anxiety..i had a headache and dizzy the first week or so on it then it stopped..and i have forgotten to take it for a day and never had any xpeierences of dizziness or any bad side effects..it did give me crazy reaction after i tried to stop after day 3 or 4...so she told me to get back on it and slowly wean off later on when we made a plan to get off..anyway..i dunno i think i may have gained some weight since on it but the doctor told me it is mostly because when i have less anxiety, you are more relaxed and are enjoying things and maybe eating more..i dunno..i do know weveryone is different on it and one may work for you and may not work for someone else =)

I felt tired and very, very nauseated when I started...so I started taking it at night. I've missed maybe two doses and noticed right away. I felt pissy and bitchy. I would get home and take the missed dose and I was so sick! I could not imagine taking it in the AM. I've been on it for about 8mos I think. It's the first med I've taken that I don't really notice it until I've missed it. I don't feel drugged up, but again I take it at night.

I took it for a couple of months...at that time, I SERIOUSLY needed something that would help me....(I was so close to admitting myself) . Anyway, I felt kinda nauseous the first week, then fine....no side effects after that. I did wean myself off of it gradually.

I took it after getting divorced - the plan from my dr. was to take it for a year, and it was perfect. No real side effects (that I noticed in the midst of a divorce LOL), and I felt SOOOO much better, and no side effects when I stopped taking it. I just gradually tapered off taking it.

Everyone's different, but it was GREAT for me.
