Hives?

I've never had them before, but last night, I broke out in hives all over my upper body. I took benadryl and they went away for a few hours. Unfortunately, as soon as it wore off they came back.

I have no idea what caused them. I haven't eaten any new foods or used any new products.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with them besides benadryl? If they don't go away by tomorrow morning, I think I'm gonna make a trip to the doctor.

I got hives from antibiotics last year, which was strange because i had taken them several times without problem before that.

Benadryl really helped me, you just have to keep taking them. You can also take a cool shower if you are really itchy. I've heard of applying cool witch hazel on the hives, but i haven't tried it myself.
Hope you feel better soon!

i don't get hives very severely, just one here or there, but my niece is highly allergic to a lot of things, and an oatmeal bath and benadryl helps a lot. i think for an adult my maybe claritin or similar might be better? benadryl usually makes me sleepy... and so does zyrtec

I get them pretty often, I usually take an antihastamine that's non-drowsy if it isn't nighttime. I then always take a cold bath or shower (it can sometimes be caused by things you've touched) and follow up with benadryl cream. Usually between those three things they'll calm down and eventually go away.

Have you purchased a new brand of laundry detergent recently (within the last month) or eaten anything odd? I hope they go away soon.

i had this happen to me too. i didn't eat or do or touch or try anything new. and it happened in the middle of the night. i was freaking out. i didn't know what it was. so at 2 in the morning i drove to my mom's house and woke her up and she threw me in a bath, ran to get some oatmeal bath stuff and benadryl. i kept taking the benadryl for two or three days. it did make me really, really tired though, but it was the weekend so it was okay. but it hasn't come back since then, but i always keep benadryl on hand now. i doubt you need to go to the doctor over it. just treat it as everyone has suggested and give it a couple of days.

A lot of times allergic reactions are caused by things you've been exposed to before. Did you consume a lot of alcohol recently? I broke out in hives last June around graduation time because my friends and I went out to the bars almost daily for a week . I had hives on my arms and stomach. They went away on their own after two weeks.

Sometimes I get hives randomly too...not so much lately, but I'd get them every few years up and through high school. I had a nice breakout of them around my face and arms right before graduation and a really bad breakout on my legs a few years before that. I never did figure out the allergen. I took Claritin and that helped...wish I could figure out the cause, though! Hives are so annoying.

I thought I was finally hive-free, but they just started popping up again. The benadryl seems to be working pretty well, but it makes me sleepy.

take something non-drowsy. if you're not sure (although plenty of people gave suggestions) ask the pharmacist.

Im not at all allergic to shellfish and once I had a shrimp cocktail and my face blew up like a blowfish and had red spots all over my arms. I did the same and took the benedrils. My DR said that there might have been too much iodine in the shrimp enough for someone to get hives. Never happened again and I eat shrimp all the time so I have to think he was right. You do know that benedril is nytol ( OTC sleeping aids) and visa-versa. They both have the same active ingredients and the same amounts of it.

I get them all the time, but it's from allergy's. I take my meds and they go away....I get them a TON when the season's change. I say if you can (or if you have insurance) go to the doc and have them give you a allergy test. Best co-pay I've spent and it gave me a peace of mind to find out why I was getting them. I didn't start to get my allergy's until I was 24 or 25.

I have terrible allergies, but I've never had a reaction like that before. I've had allergies since I was around 16. That's part of the reason I was so freaked out by the hives.
