am i tooooooo skinny???

so i just realized this the other day when i had a check up...im freaking 135lbs...with very little body fat (in the single digit range..according to the dr.). my jeans are gettin way too big for me (i cant even fit in my tr's anymore..and they are size 28). the dr. said im burning too much food and not consuming enough (even though i work at cheesecake factory and the food portions/calories are through the roof). he said one of the main problems is that i work out too much. is this true??

here is my schedule

m-r i go to school and lift/cardio after that (i dont go crazy for lifting. low weight/high rep). run about 30 mins after that/ or jump rope for 10 mins. i DONT take any supplements of what so ever..well if you wanna be technical i take that gnc vitamin pill thingy..

fri-sat: i work doubles in a restaurant. i walk approx. 10-15 miles on a double...recently a little more cuz we are super busy

sunday: i play paintball in the am (xball format). thats pretty much a full body workout. then i work at night.

so am i working out too much?? should i just take some time off??? i attempted to gain weight back in the summer but that failed.

stats:
age:21
weight: 135
height: approx. 5'8/9
body fat: i would say like..9%???

i can take pics if you guys want me to. i just think im way too skinny and dont think its healthy....any suggestions??? or is this normal?

BFP in the single digit range? Wow. You're a guy, right? 135 seems pretty light to me, but I'm by no means an expert. Maybe some of the others will have good advice, because I don't know what the best advice is. Did the doctor have any advice?

ETA: Aside from the exercising, what's your eating like? Maybe you're just not eating enough/eating the right stuff.

i am assuming you are a guy based on your information.

i have friends that are about 135-140 and 5'-9" and very low BF. i have a friend that is almost 6 feet and 135. both of them are perfectly normal guys who are active with high metabolisms.

you should be the one to decide if you are too skinny.

if you want to put on weight, then you need to put more calories in than you are burning. focus on calories from healthy sources and calorie dense foods like protein bars, healthy muffins, whole grain pasta and rice dishes, olive oil, avocados, trail mixes with nuts, fruit smoothies. start drinking your calories in healthy fruit smoothies with protein boosts in them.

i would eliminate two of your 30 minute cardio workouts per week too and do more weights instead.

i dont think you are tooooooooooooooooo skinny yet, but definitely would keep it the way you are to make sure you don't lose too much weight. You can stay the way you are or probably gain a little bit more weight and still look super hot imo.

I am 5'7.. around 125 to 130 pounds, but I have more body fat than you you are probably more fit with more muscles lol other than that, i think our dimension is almost the same.. i wear a 28 TR.

I personally wouldnt mind lose another 5 pounds or so or gain more muscle (lose some fat).. but I definitely wouldnt go any lighter than that.

135lbs does sound a bit small for a guy (unless you are a shorter male). But all is not lost so don't worry. Like Zoki here has said you need to start to consume more foods...and we are talking good quality foods, not just stuffing your face with whatever comes your way (but i must say...the cheesecake factory is a great place to eat after a really hard workout at Metro Flex gym!! We did that last weekend!).

As for supplements i would stay away from anything that says "thermogenic" or promotes fat loss. You do not need that now so don't even worry about it. I don't like to do a lot of supplementing, i like to eat, but your fish oils are very important and if you are going to add some more weights you could look into a good whey protein isolate powder along with some creatine monohydrate. Don't do a loading phase with the creatine though...i would just stick do a teaspoon before you workout and then a teaspoon afterwards to help with recovery.

In the gym try lifting heavier weights for less reps/sets. If you are benching 100lbs for 3 sets of 15...try benching 125lbs for 4 sets of 5 or something akin that. Also remember to workout your legs. So many people neglect to workout their leg muscles but squats and deadlifts not only help build your legs up (which in turn help build up the rest of the muscles in your body) they also help you workout other areas in your body. Cardio isn't as important for you right now, but you may want to include some endurance training to keep your vascular system healthy. Farmer's walks with heavy weights, or sled drags can really help with this.

Give yourself some goals to work towards as well. If you are at a low bodyfat percentage now you will probably start seeing a lot of muscular results. There is the possibility that you could look really ripped and good if you keep up with a good diet and exercise routine. In fact you are probably ahead of the game...so many men have the opposite problem, they want to get muscular but they have to cut their bodyfat percentage down in order to look that way.

If you are a younger male this may have to do with your age as well. As we get older our metabolism slows down. I am a female and up until i was 18 i could eat anything and everything and not gain a single pound. I am 25 now and i have to watch everything that i eat. I weightlift 6 days a week and do 1 hour of cardio in the AM before breakfast but i am trying to bring my BF% down to about 10% (i would maybe liek to do figure competitions eventually and this requires me to loose about another 5lbs of fat and put on another 15lbs of muscle so i know how you feel). I eat 5-6 meals a day though and i try to get in good quality foods...eggs, complex carbs...hey if you like sushi eat away, it is probably one of the best food types for you to have!

In addition to age medication can often affect your bodyweight and metabolism. I had a friend who was taking ADHD meds (vyvance i believe) and he said within a month he dropped 10lbs. He was into weightlifting so for him dropping 10lbs was a big deal since a large majority of it was probably muscle.

he's not really that abnormally skinny. his weight/height is pretty normal. perhaps he is small by north american standards, but that's never really a good measuring stick for anything other than over consumption.

pffft I wish my BF% was 9, i just did it at the gym yesterday and its 5.4% and i'm 5'11" 150lbs, so youre not much skinnier than me. I just try to eat anything (healthy) i can get my hands on and work out 3 times a day (no cardio!) and i'm slowly gaining weight

i think guys have much lower BFP than girls since they have more muscles all around. i don't think you're too skinny at all. as long as you are healthy there's nothing to worry about.

9% bodyfat isn't THAT low for a guy...most bodybuilders get down to about 4% when they are in season (mmmm i love bodybuilder season!)

But i guess when you are 135lbs it is still on the slim side.

Your doctor has told you you are too thin. Talking to the internet world where you are not "visible" is not helpful. If your doctor is telling you that, I would take it to heart and do what he/she advises. Being too thin/too heavy is unhealthy, take it to heart.

I have a guy friend who went through this. He was eating right (he's a health freak), working out, but still thought he was too skinny. So he stopped doing cardio, and now he only lifts and does other muscle-building exercises (sorry, I am not a gym rat so I don't know all the terminology!) and he looks great now. He has a lot of muscle. He is still thin but it's more lean not skinny.

at no point in his post did he indicate that his doctor told him he is too thin, underweight, etc

The whole point about body builder season is that the body fats that they get down to are not ever going to be naturally that low on anyone (male or female) and certainly not maintainable though.

Personally the super skinny body type on a guy really doesn't do it for me so yeah, I'd say if it bothers you, increase the weight you're lifting, decrease the reps, and cut back on cardio. And make sure to eat more!

I guess if women didn't have the equipment to bring new life into the world, we too could be single digit in body fat.

What is wrong with the world when a guy who is in single digits is "skinny" but a girl who may be close to single digits is pegged as "anorexic" or "bulemic?" Double standard sucks.

i dont think there is anything wrong with your size. 5'8, 135 does NOT sound too skinny at all.. you sound like youre just fit with an athletic body and a fast metabolism. Im just 5'4, 117 and ive never been told by a doctor that im too skinny.. and im def. at the lower end of the BMI chart. I was a hardcore ballet dancer, so doctors excused my slimness because of all my physical activities, which is i believe is the same thing with you.. just my opinion though, im not a doctor, but i know girls who are like 5'9, 110 so i really dont think that youre too skinny.
ETA: ohh.. hes a guy? i didnt know that.. disregard my post
