Help me learn to walk in high heels elegantly!

Can you ladies please offer me some advice on how to walk elegantly in high heels? I can do fine up to a 2.5 inch heel.... but 3 inches and higher I feel totally uncomfortable & dont carry myself well. And there are so many cute heels and sandals out there now, but many are 3.5 inch heels. They look hot on, but how do you not look like a fool wearing them? I wish there was a class to take for us high-heel challenged folk My main problem I think is I dont appear confident when trying to walk in 'em, and sometimes catch myself with bad posture(I guess because the balls of my feet are killing me!). So is there any hope or do I just stick with shorter heels for the rest of my life?

try wearing a wedge to start, they are much easier on the feet and easier to walk in. it also sounds like the ones you have don't fit properly or aren't broken in. find a pair that is comfy, and you'll have an easier time learning.

i think the only advice to give is practice! walk around the house in them until you are comfortable.

I know this isn't a solution but i always try to go for high heels that have some platform at the front of the foot too, makes it much easier and seems more level :-)
And i guess Practice makes Perfect is the right cliche here, hehe.

As for the pain, well yeah that varies from shoe to shoe, buy some gel bits for the balls of your feet so they aren't quite as "burny".

ETA- yeah Kate, we must think exactly alike!

Wearing heels is just not comfortable. Even though I have been wearing 4 inch heels for years I still have to always keep an eye on the ground ahead to make sure there are no "obstacles" and then plan ahead if there is a bumpy sidewalk or cobblestone street or whatever. I do think that you just have to go out there and do it - I can always tell when people are new to heels but you kind of have to fake your confidence. You'll get it I actually don't think wedges are any easier to wear but I do think that Stuart Weitzman heels are some of the best for stilletos. They have very thin heels but the shoe itself is flexible and relatively comfortable. Good Luck!

Put in insoles with cushion at the balls of your foot especially.
If your foot feels more comfortable you will also.

Practice.
Nothing really looks worse than a self conscious person tottering uncomfortably.
Practice.
If you can do 2.5 you can do 3.5.

I would also recommend "practicing" on a cheaper pair of heels. You don't want ones you really love to break!

I use to work in heels all the time, running from one account to another, speed racer really. Now that I'm a stay at home Mom (whom doesn't get out much) - I too feel a tad wobbly when I wear them. Hence, wear all the time when you can! The longer you wear them, the more they will not feel foreign to your feet. I miss my heels!

I second the insoles thing. Also, try starting with a little bit wider heel than stilletos or shoes with a bit of a platform for more support. Practicing with a cheap pair is good too...hit up Marshalls or something and get the cheapest, most uncomfortable you can find to practice, since that will make it easier when you get ones you actually want since for the most part, more expensive = more comfortable.

I'm able to wear 4.5" comfortably, but I'm a size 9.5-10, so I've got a lot of foot to take up that height

Along with practice and insoles, also find a pair that feels stable and is well balanced. I've tried on high heels that look hot but when I try to walk in them, I wobble all over the place because the shoe itself is badly made.

Deep down, I'll always be a flats girl though.

Maybe I need to practice. I haven't walked in heels since prom about 7 years ago and then they were 1.5 in. and I still walk like I boy, I suck

make sure the shoes fit because i find that walking in heels is easy, though not comfortable, when the shoes fit well. if theyre even a tad too big or small i look silly.

Put on some dance music at home and dance around in your heels - helps you get your balance!

walk with confidence!
more often than not, if you pretend you know how to walk in heels, you actually will! (and you'll look better)

and if you fall............. just walk it off :P

^ditto on the confidence thing. Makes a HUGE difference.

I've worn really high heels for years so I could probably go jogging in heels without a problem, lol. But the ONE thing I have to say is make sure the shoes fit your feet properly. I see way too many girls walking around with this weird half step/short/quick step sort of gait because their super cool looking shoes don't fit properly and are hurting their feet. There is nothing more ridiculous looking! lol. Sure some leather shoes loosen up a little when you wear them but especially if you have ones made out of man made materials- if they don't fit when you put them on or pinch in ANY way then they will most likely never be comfortable and -hot shoe or not- its just not worth it!!

I couldn't agree more. Definitely get good insoles. It totally makes a difference. I highly recommend Foot Petals. It's kind of pricey but SO worth it:

It's good to invest in very comfortable well-made heels. I recommend Cole Haan's heels with Nike Air technology. For a city dweller like myself, heels can truly be crippling. They are expensive, but an investment in one pair would be a good idea.

Normally I wear 2.5-3" Aerosoles heels (much cheaper, and fine for work). I cannot wear any other kinds of heels here because no matter where you go or how you get there, there is always walking on the street.

Always, always put gel ball-of-foot insoles in any non-comfort heels. Fit is really, really important, so perhaps bring some Dr Scholl's Party Feet with you to the shoe store. Make sure the heels feel stable and supportive. You cannot walk anywhere in heels that do not support your ankles.

As far as walking, it just takes practice, I suppose, but I really cannot wear them very much here with my amount of stair-climbing, changing trains and walking with a laptop. So think about your lifestyle and how much mobility and comfort you are willing to give up, as well.

Go to some discount shoe store and buy a simple pair of black pumps (easier than stilleto, harder than wedge) that fit correctly with at least 3.5" heel. Practice walking down your halway with a book balanced on the top of your head so that you're standing properly with correct posture. Start slowly, and take your time until you get the hang of it.

edit: textbooks are the easiest to start off with (imo). This is all assuming you can walk with a book balanced on the top of your head normally, so if you can't do that- practice so that you'll have correct posture and then add the heels.

I have to walk in an intense pair of heels for a play soon. I'm kinda worried now. I don't wear heels everyday and... It's sooooo going to look sketchy

I find a lot of gals try to walk stiffly with heels and that makes them look awkward.
Make sure to be comfortable, sway your hips and place foot in front of the other.
At least that's how I've been told I walk and I don't look awkward. I think... hahaha
