Question regarding unclaimed package

I did a search, but I couldn't find the answer to what I'm looking for.

Anyway, about a month ago, I'd sent out some jeans to Canada via USPS Global Express, so that has tracking and insurance included. I had been tracking the package the whole time, but once it cleared customs in Canada, the tracking stopped there. The buyer then e-mailed me saying

"Hi,
I think that canadian customs may send the package back to you, as on jan 29 it arrived in calagry alberta but was missing a form ( not sure which one), and now the item is missing. I've opened up a claim with canada post. I should be hearing back in a few days, they want to see if they can find it. Just wanted to let you know that it may come back to you. Please let me know if it does. "

I included all forms, so I'm not sure what it was missing. Anyway, we exchanged more e-mails, and this weekend it showed up at my apartment with a slip that said "unclaimed". What does that mean?

I had asked the post office, and one of the workers said that I could get my shipping money back if the package was lost, but if it was sent back to me as unclaimed, would I have to pay to ship it to the seller again? I'm just wondering what would be fair; if I should help her pay for shipping, or if she should pay for it all, or if I should pay for it all. Thanks!

It almost sounds as if the package was not claimed. Canada post will hold packages for 14 days and then return them.

If customs was returning it, they never would have attempted delivery.

Oh. Does this mean the buyer was supposed to pick it up, but she never did? That means if she wants me to send it again, would she have to pay me to ship it to her? I'm just afraid it'll be unclaimed again

^^ That would be my best guess. Canada Post will leave a card for you to take to a postal outlet to pick up your package if you're not home.

I would think she would be responsible for shipping again. If customs rejected it for some reason I would think it would state why on the package, not "unclaimed".

Generally if the buyer failed to pick it up it would come back to you stating "unclaimed". If that is indeed the case, I would ask the buyer to pay for the shipping again since it is not your fault that she failed to pick it up and why should you have to pay for it. This happened to me once and I would have asked the buyer to pay to ship it back but since she happened to live in the same city as me, I told her that I would drop it off personally, which I did.

whats strange is it looks like they only tried ONCE to deliver the package??? Usually they try several times and keep it at the PO for a while before sending it back.

Also, if Im not mistaken Canada post does NOT do deliveries at 6:30 pm..

Oops, just saw your post, Kelly. That is weird! I know at least here, they've attempted to deliver 2x for one of my packages.

I think it depends where you live. Where I am, they only try once and you get the card to pick it up. We have a massive shortage of postal workers so sometimes if they are trying to catch up I've had 6pm deliveries

I once got 2 Xpresspost packages at 7.30pm

But I don't usually get anything after like 3pm

2008/02/14 10:55 International shipment has arrived in the destination country
2008/02/13 18:37 International item has left Canada
2008/01/29 13:18 RICHMOND, BC Item processed at postal facility
2008/01/28 14:04 VANCOUVER, BC International item released from Customs for processing by Canada Post
2008/01/24 18:05 VANCOUVER, BC International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs
2008/01/23 07:41 International item has left the origin country and is en route to Canada
2008/01/22 14:53 International item mailed in origin country

Thats what it says on the Canada side. It doesn't say here that they tried to deliver it to the recipient. It does seem to be about 14 days though, so if the person didn't pick up the package, that would make a lot of sense. Try calling USPS to see if they have a better explanation.

Edit: if you look at the list, it left customs in vancouver and was moved to richmond. If there was a customs issue, it likely would have not went to richmond.

Interesting. I wonder why it was moved. I'll have to ask the post office then. Thanks for that! I didn't even think of checking the tracking via Canadapost.

Oh wow! This person's super nice She just e-mailed be back saying she'd send me additional money to send it back to her. Is there any way of making sure it won't get resent to me? She just has to make sure to pick it up, huh?

ETA: And should I just send it now, or wait til she sends the additional money? Thanks again

yeah, it always goes out of customs and then is sorted at the richmond facility before they attempt delivery. all my packages have been attempted once maybe.
Usually if i have to pay gst/pst + $5, my postal worker will not even bother attempting to deliver the package. they will just stick a notice on my door for pick-up at the post office, so they don't have to deal with the money... but if there are no charges, then they will usually just deliver it... sometimes if no one's home, they will just leave it on my doorstep!
