What do you do if USPS loses your package?

I bought a pair of jeans, shipped from Canada.

I got the brown "We tried to deliver but you weren't home" slip, and I signed it and said, "Leave behind the gate. If no one home, ring #34."

I work from home almost *every day* and the door never rang, never got another delivery slip.

Now Canada Post and USPS are both saying it was delivered. The phone guy even said I signed for it! I'm assuming he meant the "Leave behind the door thing" but still.

Is there anything I can do to find the jeans or get my money back? It's not the sellers fault, it's &%*# USPS.

I know at least from now on I'll ask sellers to write "hold at post office" so I can just go pick them up. Major hassle, but better than lost packages.

Sadly, this is just another thing in the string of about 8 billion pieces of bad luck raining down on me these days...

I don't know what you can do, other than hope that the seller insured the package & can refund you?
I've had that happen 2x, where it said "delivered" but my buyer didn't actually get the package. The first time, the jeans never ever showed up for him. The second time, she got the jeans crammed in her mailbox a few days later.

I'm sorry babe

If it makes you feel any better, I've got 2 things that evidently got lost in space through the mail in the past month...ARGH!

if you signed for it, you waived your rights to that claim.

The thing that drives me crazy is that they're saying it was delivered! And that I *signed* for it! I don't know how they could've gotten my signature, except from the "leave behind the gate" slip. I've had trouble with this postwoman (er, mail carrier) before, so... I don't know. I'd like to see a copy of what they're saying I signed, you know?

uh.... those slips are basically signing for the package. You're waiving any right to contest delivery after that.

Yeah, when you say they can leave it behind the gate or whatever, the "signature" is the permission to leave something w/o a signature as far as USPS is concerned.
Sometimes people have luck by calling the post office that delivered the package & asking to speak to the mail carrier who delivered it, and knocking on apt. complex doors asking for the package.

Woah, really? I didn't realize that. So, basically, if you sign for it with that slip, it means the mail carrier can just take your package and say it was delivered?

If she really left it behind the gate there is no way it could've been stolen -- it's just my apartment and the upstairs doofus guys who, if they DID take it, couldn't fit their arm in my 24s. And, they said they didn't see it.

Man, this totally sucks.

I can't wait till my bad luck ends. It's gotta end sometime, right?
I am *hemorrhaging* money right now. Seriously.

If a package requires signature confirmation, what do you think that slip is? It's confirming delivery with your signature, even though you aren't home. It waives the right of needing a signature at delivery, by getting your authorization to leave it at your own risk.

D, have you already talked to your mail carrier who was doing the route that day? Find out if she actually put it behind the gate, and then I guess check with your upstairs neighbors.

avatar, your pm almost got me in DEEP doo-doo at work today!

*sigh* OK I guess I'm an idiot. I honestly didn't think it was a delivery 'confirmation', as such, I thought it was a "sign here so we can redeliver it where you tell us to." There's about a .05% risk of it not getting to me if it was actually left behind the gate, and I thought the mail carrier had to do what the slip says by law, so I signed it. It's one of those big, locked city-style gates that you can only get in with a key. I have packages without a required signature left behind the gate all the time; in fact, I usually request no signature confirmation, because I always have trouble getting packages redelivered or picking them up at the P.O. The slip specifically says "Where should we leave the package?" so I didn't think there would be a problem. I can only surmise that the mail carrier left it in front of the gate on the sidewalk (which would be ridiculous), tried to stuff it in the (open) mailbox (also kind of ridiculous) or simply didn't deliver it.

I guess it's a learning experience. Oh well. Sucks to be me.
~~~
Ayesha, sadly I haven't been able to talk with the mail carrier yet, since generally no one answers the phone at that post office, and I've since moved from that address & can't talk to her directly. I'll prob have to take
some time from work to go try to talk to someone down at the P.O. I swear, I've had so many problems with USPS, I think I'll just pay for Fed-Ex ground from now on. You can even tell them when you'll be home, and they'll deliver it then!
My PO won't let me just sign the slip and leave it in my mail box. I actually have to take it to the PO and sign it before I get my package.
Awwww, thank you! I'm moving to a new apt Sat (2nd move in 2 weeks! ack!) but it's super-cute and I'll be living *alone* for the first time... I'm hoping things start to improve with the new space!
Well, I've certainly learned a lesson.... I hope I can use Fed-Ex in the future, but if not, I'm going to make a "hold at post office" request, since I've had so many problems w/USPS before.
Warning: USPS RANT BELOW!!!!
~~
Dealing with USPS is a NIGHTMARE!!!
I guess this one was my fault (signing and believing they'd leave behind the gate) but USPS has lost 2 other packages coming in to that address (no fault of mine, twice the packages were returned to the senders, damaged, having never gotten to me in the first place) and two times, priority mail letters took 5-10 -->TEN!<-- days!
So, in trying to locate this package:
Calling the 800 # is a joke, people were clueless and totally rude, and couldn't even tell me the location or phone number of my proper post office! I spoke to 4 people and no one would help me.
No one would pick up at my local P.O., either. I just kept trying a few times a day till I finally got through. The guy put me on hold for about 20-25 minutes while he looked for my package (I'd actually started calling from my cellphone while staying on hold on the landline...); when he came back on, he said my package was there! I was so excited! I told him I'd be right down, and could he put it someplace where it'd be found easily. He said, no, they'll know where to look for it. (It took him 25 minutes to find it, so that left me a little confused, but, oh well. He'd found it!!)
So I went to the Post Office. There was ONE woman behind the counter. She spent about 15-20 minutes trying to help -- and failing to help -- the one woman in front of me. When she got to me, she couldn't understand my situation. Finally, she figured out that I was in the package section of the post office looking for, you know, a package, and she took off looking for it. She said there was one there, but... It wasn't for me. The package they had, she said, was not addressed to me. She wouldn't even show it to me, though. Nothing.
So, I have an email inquiry about it now, but I have a feeling my lovely TR's in a size that actually FITS me are lost forever.
Yeah, I work from home/cafes, so no other place to deliver it to...
If i can't get fed-ex (which will redeliver pretty much whenever, so it's super convenient), I'll just label mine all a "hold at depot" so I can just pick it up there. A hassle, but way better than losing a package! Sadly, I didn't even alays get delivery notices..
But, I just moved, so I'm hoping i have better luck with this mail carrier.
i use usps all the time but i really don't like it..it's just the cheapest method but maybe it's not worth it..
and trying the 800 number is ridiculous..the stupid voice thing never understands what i'm saying and when i want to talk to someone it takes going around and around in circles till they actually connect me to a human voice! =(
and the packages,,they really don't care about our stuff right? UGH..i can go on and on..
