Nursing a busted lip

So I went to the dentist on tuesday to get a filling, and I got it, but without realizing it all day I was biting my lip. Now it's seriously busted (my mom says it's the worst busted lip she's ever seen) and I don't know what to do. I have to go to school on monday, and I don't want to show up with a hideous looking bottom lip. My mouth is now full of cold sores, it's awful, I don't know what to do! Anybody know what to do (or what to use) that can make it better, faster?

Lip - ice, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, it's a bit late for it though, but may help a bit.
Mouth sores - warm salt water rinse. It is super easy for bite wounds to get infected/inflamed

No acidy/spicy foods, and some anti-inflammatories (Motrin, advil) are about all to do at this point. It's all up to your body to heal it now.

Also, drink lots of water. You don't want to get dehydrated, or your lips will dry out. (at least for me)

yeah I did the ice thing when it first happened...it did get the swelling down (it was really swollen for a while).

I'll do the warm salt water rinse, will it hurt?

I haven't done acidy/spicy foods...I'm having a gyro tonight for dinner (if it ever gets home to me!) they would hurt too much.

PS: Are the "cold sores" on your lips/cheeks or on other areas like your gums?

I ask because it is fairly common for people to get herpes simplex outbreaks after dental treatment, and that would be a whole different treatment. The tissue manipulation, sometimes some of the chemicals we use, the stress, can sometimes trigger the virus to activate

Yes, herpes simplex is responsible for external typical "cold sores" and also intra-oral ulcers. There is a difference between canker sores and herpetic ulcers though. Canker sores (which we don't really know the cause of, but are likely viral and immune mediated) appear ONLY on what we call non-keratinized tissue, which is the inside surface of the lips and cheeks and the very bottom area of your gums where they join with the cheek/lip area (we call this un-attached gingiva), and rarely the floor of the mouth. Herpetic sores can appear all over the mouth only on initial infection, which occurs almost always as a young child (over 65% of people are infected with HSV 1, some studies suggest as many as 80%+). This is characterized by flu-like symptoms, fever, and mouth sores. On reinfection (the virus lies latent in the trigeminal nerve distribution for the rest of your life), the sores appear ONLY on KERATINIZED tissue, which is attached gum tissue, tongue, palate.

Canker sores are best treated with, in my professional experience, Aphthasol, which is a prescription drug, and also L-Lysine supplements (any health food store should have it).

Herpetic sores can be treated really only 1 way... anti-viral prescriptions for intraoral sores (valacyclovir, etc), and waiting. Once an external cold sore has erupted, there is no stopping or shortening it. If you take antivirals in the prodromal stage (when you first feel one coming on) you can shorten or halt them. But not after.

One Word: VASELINE! I once busted my lip so badly it looked like raw hamburger, religiously putting on vaseline constantly helped a ton, it was presentable (a bit swollen, on the inside a little messy) in 2 days by 5 days it was completely gone.
