| | | Computer question! So I bought a laptop today which is wireless ready. My new house has had wireless wired in. (I'm already confusing myself!) Anyway, I'm going to the beach next week and I know I will be jonesing for the forum so how do I hook it up down there? I know our house does not have wireless but it does have a phone line. If I have DSL service at my current house, what do I need to take with me?
I am such a computer moron! |

Wireless modems are not that expensive. Do you have a computer already hooked up at the beach house?
Oh hell E - PM me - I'll help you thru it! I do this for a living

There's no way around it, if you don't have a data plan it will just say "data connection refused" and you won't be able to do anything but call |

| | | This might be good if you have some IT/networking experience and know how to manipulate the hardware and software involved. For the novice user this is a freakin' mind blower... and can cause all kinds of issues with both devices. IMO - Not recommended for a non-techie. Sorry!

| | | Uhhh...you'll either have to hope that the neighbors have an unsecured wireless network that you can steal (by turning on your wireless card in the laptop, opening up network connections, choosing wireless network connection, show list of networks, and connecting) or get internet service at the beachhouse. You could probably get some cheap dialup set up since you have a phone line. As for the blackberry, I have never used one before, so I have no idea how to set that all up. Good luck! ;) |

Will I need it? | new laptops generally come with both an ethernet card so you can connect to your DSL and a modem so you can connect to a phone line and yours also has wireless access, so you have 3 options to get online but you need to subscribe to a service for the DSL and phoneline/modem access whereas with the wireless if your neighbot or someone close to you has an unsecured line your wireless will pick it up and allow you to access the internet via the other people's subscription.
If you lock on to your laptop and it does not find the nteworks by itself, just rightclick on the icon and you will see an option for "view available wireless networks" click on that and it will show you all the networks in the area and also tell you if they are secured or unsecured. Choose one of the unsecured ones with the highest signal strenght and you should be in business. Hope this helps. |

| | | ^^LOL, methinks I've got it!
So, with my laptop, I can't do anything at the beach unless there is DSL already hooked up and then I would still need the router.
And if my Blackberry gets here, I need to call them and add more service to my existing RAZR plan to get to AF.
Am I straight now? |
