if you're considering 'borrowing' wireless internet service then just be cautious while sending sensitive material over the net. ie. logging into bank accounts, ebay/paypal purchases, etc.

why do you need a wireless router again? If your beach house is connected to the internet then just plug it directly in your laptop NIC card

yeah i was confused by this thread...

most people connect wirelessly using a wireless ROUTER that's connected to the modem. the router splits the internet connection between computers.

at the beach house, if there's an internet connection set up then i'm pretty sure that theres a modem already. if you want to connect wireless, you'll need a wireless router for that modem. you can always run an ethernet cable also but it's quite a hassle depending on how big the beach house is, where the modem is located, and where you want to be.

as far as connecting to a cellphone... there are a few ways to do this... first you'll need a data plan.. preferably unlimited cause in about 5 min you can use about 5mb of data or more. most providers give you very little. then you're going to need a way to connect the phone to your computer, either by bluetooth, infrared, or usb data cable. this is where it gets complicated. you'll need a connection manager (CM) to detect the connection and then have the phone allow the computer to connect to the internet through it. depending on the provider, different settings will be needed and you can just contact them.

it takes alot of trial and error though. best thing to do if you cant connect wirelessly using your computer, just get the data plan and use your blackberry to surf the web while youre at the beach.

E has no internet connection at the beach house. She must rely on the kindness of strangers

Yes, and my uncle has asked all the neigbors. We don't know where this signal is coming from!

But at least it's working, right? And I won't pay any bills online!

Thanks for all the advice, guys!
