Why do my cats hate each other??

I have two eight year old boy kitties (brothers). I adopted them when they were twelve weeks old, and they have never been separated. Suddenly one day, they started to HATE each other, and it's been going on for maybe a year or so. They use to cuddle and bathe each other, and now they can't stand the sight of each other, and I am sick of the hissing and snarling .. . what to do? Any advice from kitty lovin' AFers??

I have a friend with the same problem. It got so bad that she has to keep them apart. She has to keep one of them locked in a room while the other is out. One of them has a heart condition so she has no choice. Other than that I have no clue. Perhaps you should talk to your vet, if you have a good one. My cats (mother and son) do not get along at all, but its not so bad that I have to keep them apart.

Thanks--yeah, I also have to do time outs with them. So weird.. . I'll talk to the vet and see what he says. Someone else told me to put fish oil on the backs of their necks, and lock them in a room together so that they will re-bond. Hmmmm.. .

I agree!--a little risky. I would have to stand watch outside the door the entire time to make sure no one got hurt... Crazy baby cats..

Do they actually come to blows or do they just hiss and snarl? My two just smack eachother down a few times a day, but its just like a drive by and they forget about it. Have you changed to a different food or anything? Mine get really nasty over canned food.

^ Mostly they just hiss, snarl and get all puffed up and macho--it's like they're showing off or something, like a dominance thing... ? For the most part, they don't really hurt each other, though they do get a good swipe in once and a while. Some days are worse than others--if they get cranky, they take it out on each other.

My gardens in my yard are the neighborhood cat hang out . There is a concrete bench and which ever cat is on it is the King of my Yard
I have had cats, and loved them dearly, but they are definitely strange! Hopefully yours get over their dominance thing and become buds again...but i agree with Staycii about the fish oil Don't do it!

Cats are solitary. They are not pack animals therefore they do not fight for dominance. They are territorial creatures. They probably just want their space and when they come in contact with each other is when you see the hissing.

^ I agree that it is most likely a territory issue. What I can't figure out is why they adored each other for seven years, and then--for whatever mysterious reason(s)--became hostile to one another. I may never figure this one out.

LOL! When other cats come in my yard my male cat chases them off and then comes back and does celebratory rolls all over the driveway and wants to be petted. He acts like he has won some very big and important contest.

Cats are indeed very strange animals. I have a certain pillow that they all like, but they use it at different times of the day. Itís almost as if they have worked out a schedule or something because when the time is up the other cat is waiting and they switch. They have seperate but equal relationship and I don't think dogs do it that way.

I have two male cats, one is 5 and the other is 2. We adopted the older cat when he was 3 months old. 2 yrs ago we adopted the younger cat when he was several weeks old. It's weird, but both of them have always got along very well! The younger cat is the more friendly and playful cat and chases the other one around the house all the time. I have seen my older cat get mad and hiss before when the younger one plays too aggressively. But that happens very rarely. They always play and follow each other around, they sleep in the same spots, sometimes right beside each other and my younger cat even helps clean the other cat too by licking his head etc. haha. I agree though, that cats are very weird sometimes.

Lol, it is true that kitties are eccentric animals, and difficult for mere humans to understand sometimes. I have noticed that I have to be sure to give them VERY equal pets and attention, each in view of the other, and if I do that, the tension between them is less. Funny creatures--how I love them.

I think also that they are just getting a bit older now, and maybe they are becoming cranky old gentlemen kitties. They seem to need their space from each other more now than they did whey they were young, but they want LOTS of affection and attention from husband and me.

I would try Feliway with a diffuser...it really helped our kitties numerous times, once for when we moved and they suddenly forgot they knew each other, and once for litterbox issues. I really think it helps calm them...also try drops of Bach Rescue Remedy (for pets) in their water or on treats.

I'm assuming you already have two litterboxes in different places and feed them in different places.

I would be so sad and confused too if my kitties suddenly hated each other, but they are certainly interesting creatures.

I have 2 sisters and their mom, and the 2 do everyyything together (they seem to be particularly obsessed with cleaning inside each others ears?), and get baths from mom (though she sometimes plays too rough for their liking and there will be the occasional hiss, but more likely just running away from her).

Previously I had a mom and 1 of her babies, and they also did everything together, though towards the end of mom's life when she was getting more ill she would distance herself a little, as if to say well, try to get used to when i'm not here But I take it you've probably ruled out any medical issue with one of them.

I second the Feliway.

^^Do they act like this? LOL

This is why I can't figure out why my mama cat and son can't stand eachother. He is 9 and I think she is only about 10. I guess for her its like a grown up kid who won't leave home.

Maybe it worked out with yours because they were/are the same gender. I have always wondered if it was sort of natural for mine to hate eachother due to mating issues or something. Once he got to be an adult cat she didn't like him anymore.

OMG. Mine are like that minus the talking out-loud! But I must say, one of mine was next to me sleeping when I started playing that, and she woke right up and was apparently fascinated by the convo!

OMG the talking kitties! Soooo cute!

Thanks for the Feliway suggestions. And I have heard that the Bach remedies are great for pets too. I will try both.

^^^^ Yes, I have one box per kitty, and they have their own individual food bowls and eat at separate ends of the kitchen.

^^^ And yes, my kitties are super healthy, and go for their checkups regularly, so the tension is not related to any health issue.

We'll see what happens with the Feliway.

My cats got mad .

Someone put up a video response to this of his cat getting angry and hissing at the computer while playing the video. It was so cute.
