No, that's just not how a dog's mind works. You (both, not only Abel) will get an understanding of how a dog thinks from reading up and learning. Do it as fast as you can to avoid future breaches of trust and more confusion.

He is exhibiting submissive behavior to you, which should not be necessary, especially not submissive peeing. The sooner you fix the underlying misunderstandings of doggy behavior and psychology, the sooner the symptoms will vanish.
