In This Thread, We Talk About Running

Who else is a runner? I got back into running a couple of weeks ago and realized how much I missed it! This is the best time of year for it too...before the crazy heat sets in. I was thinking about doing a half-marathon in the fall or winter- anyone else into distance running?

I was before I got preggers; I want to get into it again after this baby...I miss it. I have done some road races, etc. I'm sure it will take me a bit to get in shape again after baby #6!

Congrats! I like your sig, it's funny. Well I guess you'll just have to take it slow. The Runners' World discussion forums has a board for female runners and I see a lot of threads about moms running with strollers, so who knows!

I started running about 2.5 years ago... it's a love/hate relationship for me. I've done about six 10K races and a half marathon... thinking about training for "my first triathlon" and I will eventually do a full marathon when my body is finished growing (I am 19).

I'll go for long stretches of running every day/every other day and then as much as a 2 month drought.. haha. I wish I could be more consistent. Any tips?

I'm no runner but I would love to compete in a 10k relay this fall. I have trouble with shin splints, knee pain and stress fractures in the feet so hopefully I can work myself up to completing the race and becoming a better "distance" runner.

I'm trying to get up to running a 1/2 or full marathon. But I had some overpronation problems and ended up in one of those clunky 'strap me up Scottie' booties for a few months. AND I have some knee problems. But, I'm trying to increase my mileage before it starts to get any hotter.

^same here! I supinate (my feet roll out) and I have trouble sometimes with knee issues after 6 miles. I am slowing building up. There's NOTHING that compares to the great feeling after a long run

Don't worry, I did a comprehensive survey of my fellow Savannahians and discovered that it was just my own malfunctioning um, system, and not the water or anything like that. Must we dredge up THAT thread? Incidentally, running helps to...uh, never mind. Although in all seriousness, I do not recommend drinking the tap water in Savannah simply because it tastes weird.

I'm hoping to run a half marathon sometime this year if I can find a good one/get the time off from work. Eventually I would love to do a full marathon. I was gonna run Philly last year but got too busy...between doing a feature and then a show back to back, I didn't have time to train.

In building up to longer distances, I've found that it helps to alternate focusing on speed, with focusing on how far you can run. So on the days when you do shorter runs, just run faster, and then slow down for the longer distances. I guess it sounds kinda obvious but it seems like a good way to build stamina.

i was doing 6-7 milers with my mom over the past week while she is training for an upcoming marathon. not too bad...but we run pretty slow with lots of pacing (walking intervals).

i just don't have the focus to do anything beyond a 1/2 marathon....

^I agree with Zoki, I focus on pace rather than speed. It helps save my knees!
I really want to do a half sometime this year. We'll see if I have the discipline.

I was thinking it would be really cool to get into trail running, anybody run trails? I'd be kinda freaked out that I'd trip over a huge rock and go flying or something...!

Seriously, 1/2 marathons rock. Anything beyond it is torture IMO. I have done one marathon and I will never do another. I do love the 13.1 milers though
I run 30-35 miles/wk

i've been running for about 10+ yrs. My mileage is always varying throughout the yr. At times, I've only run a few miles a week but in the past few months i've stepped it up again to about 20mi/wk. there is nothing like the feeling of a long run or an amazing runner's high after a race.

i just did the bolder boulder 10k on memorial day. if anyone likes to travel for races - this is a great one! it is one of the top road races in the country...very entertaining the whole way. i also just signed up for a half marathon in napa at the end of oct. i figure this will force me to keep up all the miles and i get a mini-vacation in beautiful northern california. i've never done a half marathon before so i'm really excited!!

Jamie,
How do you train for a half a marathon? I'm considering a half-tri but I am really afraid of running long distances. The swim and the bike is not a problem but the run may kill me.

^Vis, a half-marathon doesnt have swimming or biking - that's a Half-Tri I am guessing.
Half-marathon (I am training for one starting next month)...I am literally splitting my friend's training schedule that she used for the whole marathon she just finished on Sunday in San Diego. I'll PM it to you .

Yeah, I know. I probably would try running a half marathon before running a half tri.

i just did a search for half marathon training in google. it all seems do-able and slowly builds mileage every week.

here's the program i think i'm going to do:
Advanced Beginner Half Marathon Training Program - 16 Weeks of Running Training for the Half Marathon

or this one:
Half marathon training

i haven't decided yet.
