Talk to me about your gym membership!

Okay, so my gym is going into summer hours (I work out at my alma mater, but in the summers, they change their hours and I cannot work around their summer hours) and I need to sign up for a "real" gym for at least a few months.

I have two options --

1) BSC (Boston Sports Club) -- I toured there this weekend and the facility is amazing! It is brand spanking new, about 5 minutes from my house and tons of machines, freeweights, a yoga studio, spinning studio, a zillion classes, TVs on all the cardio machines (cheesy, but it helps the time go by for me), free towel service, a nice locker room, it's clean and doesn't smell, etc. However, it is pretty pricey ($55/month) and I am locked into a contract of at least a year.

2) Planet Fitness -- about 10 minutes from my house. Not as nice. The machines are OK, but not brand new and state-of-the-art. However, this place is cheap (like $20/month). I would also have to sign a contract for at least a year. This gym is also predominantly male and "oogling" has been an issue from what I've read on Yelp.

For those of you who work out at a gym, what factors are important to you? I mostly work out during non-peak hours, so crowds aren't a huge factor for me. The price doesn't really turn me off that much, but I am wondering if the "niceness" of the more expensive gym is worth it.

Thanks

yes, the niceness (clean towels available for your use, a variety of equipment) is worth it.

if the money really isn't a problem for you, i would totally go with the BSC. aside from everything else, if one gym has a noted "oogling" problem present i would stay away.

Pay for the niceness. I pay $57/month for my gym that has a ton of classes, towel service, really nice locker rooms, and a great atmosphere. Totally worth it to me, because i look forward to going.
My parents belong to PF and I don't love it...esp. the locker rooms.

24Hour is buying out Boston Sports Club (as well as NY Sports Club) by end of 2008 - beginning of 2009. Some people hate 24 Hour - but I happen to love it. The ones I go to are clean and the machines work well. Sigh - I belong to 3 gyms right now because I bought packages years ago and only pay like $100 for a yearly membership I kept them. I belong to 24 hour (I pay $24/month for this one and I LOVE the fitness classes - which keeps me going). I belong to Bally's (I paid $99/year for this as a lifetime membership) - but I hate Bally's except for the occasional Shadow Box class and I belong to Fitness 19 which is much like Planet Fitness ( I belong to this one because its $11/month and I located on my run around the lake so I lift weights there after my run).

Okay so Im nuts...but if I were you I would choose BSC. They have better classes, I think better machinery and if you rae just joining for the summer they usually have a $199 Summer month rate (that may just be for students, however) that runs from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend - ask them about that.

ITA 100%. My gym is very nice, which is a huge motivator to go. There's also a day spa attached that I go to, and I can leave my son at the daycare in the gym.

I think it makes all the difference in the world.

Not only the niceness, pay for the convenience! Saving 10 min a day doesn't sound like much, but it will probably affect your willingness to work out a lot.

1. NO STAIRS. I hate having to go up and down stairs to get to different floors that contain different sections of the gym.
2. Open either very late or 24 hours. I work out at night when no one else is around and I have the whole workout floor to myself.
3. No dumbass dress code. I wear tank tops to work out in. I hate "no tank tops rules", or being only able to wear tanks in certain parts of the gym. I am currently accommodating my current gym's "no tank top" rule, but I don't like it.
3. Decent changerooms/washrooms. Enough said.
4. Not too many students/young people. They irritate me for some reason.
5. New and in in good condition equipment.
6. Multiple free-weights. No just one set for each weight.
7. Distance from home.
8. It is not P90X

9. Working hair dryers. It ticks me off when I can't dry my hair.
10. Clean pink towels.
