| | | running woes/possible injury... advice ? ok, so i am kinda afraid i may have broken my toe.....
iv never broken a bone, and im not good with acknowledging when something hurts, so i dont really have any idea what this would feel like. but.
i ran down a really steep hill on the way to the gym today (lots of oppurtunities to jam my feet/toes into my shoes) then when i got there i ran over 3 miles, some for pretty fast (i was motivated cuz iv been partying a lot lately)
anyway, on the way home my 2nd toe (next to my big toe) really hurt, but i thought i was just sore cuz i havent been keeping in shape. this was at 1pm today. we just walked to a pub like 6 blocks from my apt (10 pm) and by the time we got home i was in so much pain (after a few beers too...) my toe is a bit swollen, but only really hurts when i try to walk on it (not with just moving, etc). has anyone ever broken their toe? any advice on what i might have done? school starts in two days, if it doesnt get better its bad enough that i may go to the doctor..
help.

| | | Take ibuprofen and ice it. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, as well as a pain reliever, so it should help with the swelling and pain. Try and stay off it if you can. It could just be a sprain or bruise...it usually takes one tramatic event to break a bone, and it would most likely hurt right away when you did it (an exception being stress fractures, but those are mostly in bones directly bearing a lot of weight). Normally doctors don't do too much for broken toes, except maybe prescribe some very mild pain meds and tell you to rest.
Another possible thing, that I get from running hills, or playing soccer occasionally, is blisters underneath my toenails...particularly on the "index" toes (I don't know what else to call it, haha). They hurt like hell, and make the nail fall off after a few weeks (really gross, I know). I don't think this is very common though but the pain has a slow onset so I thought it was worth mentioning.

| | | can you manually flex the digits in your toe, or is that where the pain comes from?
is the swelling coming from around the nail bed? |

omg gross. no its not the toenail, i hope it doesnt fall off...
i can actually move it around without it really hurting (it does feel kind of wierd tho) but when i walk or put any weight on that foot it really hurts. the pain is more at the joint/where my toe hits my foot, and it hurts through my foot (like down the tendon ?) the swelling is down there too, not around the nailbed.

| | | I hope you feel better. Rest, ice and take meds.
Its never a good idea to go and run 3 miles without having exercised in a long time. You are just asking for an injury.

| | | I am a runner too and i have had a similar problem. Is your 2nd toe longer than your big toe? If so, this may be the problem. My
2nd toe would repeatedly hit the front of my shoe causing major pain for months until my doctor had me switch to different shoes that helped avoid this. Every step I took caused shooting pains.

try flexing your foot downwards and have someone provide light resistance to the top of your toes as you flex your toes upwards. does this cause pain across the top of your foot? |

| | | i think you have an acute case of extensor tendonitis caused by your sudden foray into running. these tendons come from the muscles on the front of your shin and attach to your toes and function to pull the foot upwards. you can do some calf muscle stretching to help recover it. |
