WOrk and weight gain

Friggin sucks, I am officially up a jean size because of work.

I eat the same (if not better, more humanly hours), and I sleep earlier and my skin has cleared up.

BUT I am beginning to form a belly and excess muffin.

My legs are still fine, they still fit well in my regular size jeans, its the the waist is killing me.

Any tips? Foods I should avoid? Exercises I can do at work?

Do you go out for lunch? That killed me - I gained almost 10 lbs in 7 months when I worked.

I gained weight from just sitting all day long (and of course the twinkies and ding dongs that were readily available ).

I always eat in my office and then go out for a walk. Every lunch hour.

I limit myself to eating out once a week only, if not less!

Take a walk during lunch if you can.

One of the things I am going to try is sitting on a balance ball at my computer instead of a regular chair. It will help my posture (which has gotten horrible) and strengthen my core a bit too. Maybe if you are gaining weight in the tummy area that would help. I understand that not every office will let you bring one of those in....and some people might look at you a bit funny at first!

Gaiam also makes a chair that has a balance ball built into it.

I gained like 5 pounds in the 2 months since school started (I'm a teacher) and it's pretty much due to 3 factors:
1) less time to work out (now I can only regularly get in 3 workouts M-F instead of 4)
2) More crap food available all the time
3) Less time to cook healthy food for dinner

I'm trying to take it off by only eating what I bring to work with me & working out 2x on the weekends, plus planning healthy weekday meals.

I hate this, it happens every year at the end of summer when I start work again.

The thing is, i never eat in regardless of what i am doing. I always eat out so where i am eating is not the issue. its so weird...

And i never snack at work ever. I dont know where this extra buldge is coming from?!

maybe your metabolism is going slower and you need to start eating smaller portions or do more exercise .... I think it starts happening when you are 25-27 years old. Eating more frequently helps a lot to keep it up (i now eat 5-6 times a day)

Are you under a lot of stress at work? That might contribute

I just started an 8-5 job and am worried about the same thing. My solution has been that for lunches to just have soup. For me, I started feeling like I was gaining weight when I was having a larger, heavier lunch and then just sitting down again at my desk for the next many hours, but with a liquid lunch I don't feel as "heavy" with food, if that makes sense. Also, I have put myself on a "sugar ban" at work, because everyone always brings in chocolates, treats, candy, bagels, etc etc. As Jessani said, I basically limit myself to the food I bring (and I sometimes bring fruit as a treat, as well). This goes down the drain every now and then (ie today=Halloween potluck), but for the most part it has worked. Also, if I'm too tired or busy to work out, I try to do exercises at home every night- things like jumping rope for 15 minutes, doing lunges, sit-ups, squats, leg lifts, pilates-type stuff, etc.

Ugg work just drains the body. I seriously got home today at 5:30, just took a THREE HOUR nap, and the entire time I had vivid dreams about...WORK

Yeah, it might be your age....I started gaining a little bit of weight around my middle right about the time I hit 26. Before my tummy was flat as can be...now I've definitely got to WORK at it. Its not fair

If you really haven't changed your eating or workout habits much, then it seems to me like your metabolism would be to blame. If your skin is clearing up and you are sleeping better, I don't think the "stress" is causing you any bodily harm that would lead to weight gain...

Starting to work FT was a real struggle. I think I hear the vending machine calling my name during the day- usually in the afternoon. I try to bring my lunch as much as possible and if I don't have time for breakfast in the morning at home, I keep packets of oatmeal at my desk to eat when I get to work. Very good for filling me up! But its sooo hard because we have clients who always send over food as "thank yous", the pressure to go out to eat with co-workers is pretty strong and sheesh, it just seems like its always someone's birthday or a holiday around here where people bring in more damn food! Its definitely a struggle.

See I have had the opposite problem...I am 24, almost 25 but my metabolism slowed down when I turned 18. I gained a ton of weight (I went from being 5'3" and 110lbs to being about 130lbs which looked like a LOT on my small frame). After going off the BCP and eating better I lost most of my weight.

I just started to work full time again and I found that i don't even have time to eat and I've lost weight because of it. Also since I have moved i've stopped going out at night after writting 20 page essays for a chocolate or fast food run. I know it is bad not to eat and I probably should start bringing a small lunch with me . It sucks because now all of my jeans are too big

What I find helps me out at work is getting up and going for a walk if I want to speak with a coworker instead of sending then an Email. I also see a lot of people going for walks on their lunch breaks.

Going to the gym after work is also great to help get into shape and relax!

I've been bring a small container of (natural) peanut butter & an apple that I slice & dip to work every day. It fills me up to where I don't even eat lunch most days. It's amazing.

It could be your posture. I was reading a few months ago an article on the changes of our bodies since computers became a part of life. It said something to the effect our bellys are appearing bigger because of our bad slouching at our desks.I totally belive it.
Personally I notice when I stop the sweets my muffin top sissappears but when I over indulge like i usally do it becomes prominent.

^^I definitely notice that, too. Its amazing how much slimmer you look with correct posture!

Yoga helps as well. Sometimes I do 20 minutes before bed, they have some "On Demand" workouts on Comcast cable that I do. If I feel like my posture is getting bad, or I notice a bit of a muffin, I make sure I do it daily. Definitely makes a difference.

Yeah my friend told me about the posture thing, its just my chair is so uncomfortable (wheels at the bottom) and its so tall that it doesnt slide completely under the desk so I am sitting kinda far from my computer and I slouch towards it. I need to speak to my boss about that.

I hear you! I was actually LOSING weight the first month of the year (stress!!!!) but ever since the Halloween candy started showing up...

I REALLY need to get back to the gym. I have 2 kids and a crazy schedule, so I need to get crack-a-lackin' on getting up for 5 am workouts.
