Cramps when I exercise

Ok so I almost ALWAYS get cramps (and for some reason its mostly on my left side) when I run, or jump rope, or something similar to those.
I always make sure I drink and eat way before I exercise (at least 30 min) and I make sure I drink plenty of water well before exercising.
I make sure to breathe thru the nose and out the mouth most of the time. When I do cramp up, I try those stretching exercises but they never work.
So most of the time I just take a break, walk around the room a bit, and go back to working out, but again, most of the time the cramping will come back.

Am I doing something wrong?! I've even tried drinking water while I exercise, but that doesn't help, still get cramps, and I've tried NOT drinking water while exercising, but I still cramp up.

try warming up before you exercise?
Also you might wanna drink something like gatorade to replenish lost electrolytes....
I used to get leg cramps alot because of low sodium levels.

are you getting lots of water throughout the day? if you aren't, try it. A lot of cramps are due to dehydration or not being fully hydrated.

hope things get better for you though...cramps suck.

It could be an electrolyte inbalance. Do you take a multi-vitamin? My friend gets leg cramps when she isn't getting enough potassium. Maybe try eating a banana before you are going to do a hard workout.

i used to play soccer (waaaay back in the day) and I would get those all the time. If they are near your stomach, my coach always just told me to keep running/whatever, and contract your abs as hard as possible the whole time. it totally worked, Im not sure how scientific it is but now I hardly get them (probably b/c my body is trained to like 'suck in') LOL .
you have to give it a bit of time, but it does work

electrolytes are something that you need, so the gatorade is a good idea, also potassium is needed, so try to eat more bananas in your diet. Try not to hold your breath when you work out, that'll cause cramps.

Thats all I can think of.

Drinking water (or anyother liquid) or eating too close to running/working out can cause cramps in some people. I can't eat or drink anything for 3-4 hours before running or else I will get cramps too. The kind of cramps you're talking about are different than the leg cramps or even abdominal muscle cramps that are caused by dehydration.

Try hydrating during the day, but then stop about 3 hours before working out. It might not help, but maybe it will. I used to run competatively and had to be very careful about what and when I ate and drank. I had to plan my meals when I was in training and especially on race days because I would cramp up easily. I run really early in the morning now because I don't have problems with cramps because it's been many hours since I ate or drank.

When you get a cramp, push on it and take a deep breath in through your mouth and forcefully blow it out through your mouth. That's the way I relieve my cramps when I get them. It helps to relax your diaphram which spasms and causes the pain. it might not work for you, but it's worth a try. I know how frustrating it is. Good Luck!

I don't drink caffeinated drinks, well I do but rarely. Starbucks maybe once every one or two months, soda once or twice a month.

just because i eat sweets doesn't mean i drown myself in soda and coffee...the first time i lost a lot of weight was because i cut out soda, and since then i don't really drink it. i don't like coffee either.

another reason why sports drinks should be consumed after a workout. sugar in them cause cramps.
