Yoga vs. pilates?

I want to take one of the two next semester... since having to go for class will make sure I am getting in a workout at least twice a week.

So... I am hoping this isn't a stupid question, but what's the difference between yoga and pilates?

It seems that yoga is more focused on the mind and pilates on the body, but what are the other differences? What do you prefer?

My main goal is not necessarily to tone my body (I usually lift weights for that), although that would be great. I just want something that will make me feel good and energized.

Pilates are targeting your core muscles and help with toning/strengthening. There will be very little stretching involved.

Yoga can be very relaxing and can be very challenging and tiring. It's all depend on the style of the yoga really.

I did both pilates and yoga and love yoga more.

It really depends on your exercise style... if I want to feel energized, I usually go for some kind of cardio class, like Zumba or kickboxing.

I've done both yoga and pilates... I prefer pilates, because I don't really like holding poses for too long I prefer constant movement rather than flowing from one pose to the next. But, to each her own

For yoga, there are many types and you should try them to see which one suits you best... Hatha, Vinyasa, Bikram, Ashtanga, etc. It also is very dependent on the teacher. I've taken Vinyasa classes with one instructor and loved it, then when she had a sub one day, I ended up hating it because the instructor just wasn't good. Yoga is more difficult than it looks... at first, I was like, "I can do this, it looks so easy." But, it really isn't!

Thanks ladies. I think I am going to go with pilates...

I'm not sure about the style of yoga or pilates that are being offered... it's through my school, and it's free, so that's why I am wanting to take advantage.

Pilates is awesome for toning and getting long and lean muscles whereas lifting weights will not lengthen muscles. Yoga is more for the mind and relaxation and it's very hard. Yoga will tone you up a bit but pilates is much better for toning.

My suggestion for yoga would be to go to the very good yoga studio vs. cheap community center classes. The very first impression is crucial IMHO
You can always find something cheaper after you try it.

Off topic, but what does 'gentle' yoga entail? I'm looking into it for my back.

I am not agree with you. According to me pilates are better than yoga and also most effective for weight loss. But it doesn't mean that yoga is not good or effective way to stay healthy. Actually its up to you that what you want to do and which is better for you.

yoga exercises can be very soothing and can be very challenging and exhausting, It's all depend on the style of the yoga exercises really, I did both yoga and yoga exercises and love yoga exercises more, yoga exercises make you more happy and more comfortable than you were before you worked out....

When you try to compare Yoga and Pilates, you are not comparing apples with oranges.

As far as i know pilates and Yoga both are quite different techniques for toning body.. Yoga is just like relaxing and releasing stress and pilates are like stretching muscles .. I suggest you to try pilates
