working out when sore?

couldn't find relevant threads when searching (unless i don't put the right keywords in) but usually when i worked out before, i would skip days in between because i'd be sore. but now i want to try working out 4 days a week (mon-thurs) and then bikram yoga on fridays.

on monday i worked out my upper and today i worked out my lower. i'm still slightly sore from monday but is it okay for me to work out my upper again tomorrow even if i'm still a little sore?

i read that it's good to rest in between your muscle groups but i'm not sure if anything bad happens if i work out while sore?

any help would be great thanks in advance!

There have been arguments on both sides of this, but the generally accepted advice is "rest is best." While your body gets used to the new schedule you may want to consider lighter workouts on mon/tues and then the heavier ones on weds/thurs which would give you body more time to recover over the weekend.

when i woke up this morning, i could barely straighten my arms.. move it even . getting the backpack on was def. a hassle but now it's just slightly sore. went from like... a 7/ 10 to a 3/ 10 on a pain scale.

do you think it's okay if i just do a lighter upper body work out? ie. using lighter weights so that i'm still working out the muscle (googleing this question many people say 24/48 hours rest, and tomorrow would make it 48 hours) but not over using it ?

If this is your first week of working out after taking a few weeks off, then your muscles probably just need a few extra days to recover and get back in the groove. It also depends on how hard you're working your muscles. I'm used to giving a muscle group a full week's rest because I try to work pretty hard. I break the workout days into 3 so I don't end up with just one or two days a week: shoulders/chest/triceps, back/biceps, and legs.

I don't recommend working out when still sore. It's not going to be fun, and you don't want to get into the mentally that working out hurts. Maybe just do cardio today?

so from personal experience and what i have read in the past, it is more than okay to work out while sore. i think the general rule is: if you are very sore, like at a 7, then rest but if you are at a 3, then it's okay to work out but you should take it easier. and if i'm in between and my legs are not the major issue...if i really don't want to skip a full work out day, i do like the user above suggests, cardio. a nice jog or low impact elliptical machine. hope this helps.
