suggests that though there is a reported increase in activation of the gluteal, hamstring, and calf muscles, the evidence of whether or not this particular "type" of muscle activation actually will result in increased definition, visually, is inconclusive.
It does mention that anecdotally, women seem to like these shoes. However, it also suggests that some of the results women are seeing are actually thanks to the placebo effect - in this case, when women are wearing these shoes, they actually subconsciously increase the frequency and quality of their walking because they are specifically looking to get use out of the shoes.
