Runners - where do you run?

Just curious where the runners out there go to run. I find it very difficult to find areas around my house so I was curious what all of you do?

Do you have any parks near you? I like to find parks or trails. If I run on a trail, I take my big dog or a friend Normally I just run outside.

^ I do the same, minus the dog part, lol

I ran cross country, so I can make up routes in park pretty easily.

We have a really pretty trail, but I am nervous as hell to run it alone. I am a wimp because it is so secluded.

There's a website that I use to track my runs, and it tells me how long it is so i can plan beforehand. I use it when i go visit my family because i'm not that familiar with the area. I also map out different routes for home, work, and when i was at school. People also post routes and can make comments, like "really pretty flowers to look at" or whatever, so you know you have something to look forward to. Or like a landmark! You can save your routes too.

I drive to a park about 2 miles away from my house. They have great paved trails -- although I always run in the daytime.

I take my daughter in a jogging stroller with me.

I have a few routes now that I know, but I get bored easily so I either use google pedometer to create new routes or I search for routes on mapmyrun or sparkpeople fitness maps Fitness Maps and Run Tracking from SparkPeople.com

I also do probably 1-2 runs a week on the treadmill (depending on the weather and when I have to work out), but it's really boring to do over 5 miles on a treadmill.

Definitely check out parks around you and/or see if there is a running club in your area. They often have routes posted on their websites.

Edit: I started doing all this because I also dont' have great running options around my house- roads have no shoulders and everything is steep hills, very little flat.

I used to run on the rail trail near my house as well as dirt trails in local parks. I really liked the dirt trails as they were more forgiving on the joints and it was nice to get out of the city and be surrounded by trees and nature. Also I could get some good hill workouts on the park trails.

hahah i just realized that i do as well.

OP: where are you from?

I basically live in the U-District here in Seattle and there are SO many places to run: around campus, burke-gilman trail, to/around greenlake just to name a few.

or just to the gym where there's an indoor track, treadmills, ect...

I *hate* my town. There's no place to run, we have a park with a small circle paved track... or crappy sidewalks that you have to cross streets every block... or difficult hiking trails that aren't stroller accessable.

I'd LOVE to have a nice trail to jog with the stoller on... I'm feeling flabby and unhappy with myself from the lack of exercise/fresh air (of course its been over 95 degrees for the last month... other than the last 3 days of rain storms)

I run on my treadmill

Or around campus, around my neighborhood, or by the country club.

I hate treadmills with a passion! I haven't used one since I was a kid.

I need to get outside to exercise, or I feel cooped up... but, every time I do, I seem to come across some of the same scary people. They're EVERYWHERE

I usually run in Runyun Canyon which is pretty close to my place. Has some nice up steep up hill & down hill slopes as well as some flat areas.

LMAO

I would love to run but my lungs won't allow it. We do have a lot of places I see runners though. Mostly I see people running on the sidewalk and even the different bike trails. Which might not be so safe but they do it anyway.

I can't do treadmills either, I'm 6'4" and I'm always worried that with my long stride I will end up falling off the back of the thing. There's also nothing to look at and it's not as easy to vary your pace.

I live in an urban area so I just run around here, it's very common. Chicago is easy to figure out distance as well, every 8 blocks = 1 mile so tracking distance is super easy. Sucks for me in the winter though as I generally stick to indoor bikes at the gym.

I only run around the block with my dog. It's exactly a half mile so I am working my way up to running 5 miles.

Thanks for all the replies. I had not considered going to a park so that is a great idea. I have been running in my neighborhood, but from end to end it is only about 2 miles and very hilly so I can't really get a good speed going. I hate running on treadmills and my dog would not protect me from a fly. I love the idea of taking a jogger stroller though with my daughter to a park. Once it is cooler here in GA she would love that.

^this.
So mostly at the gym, but if I have a friend with me, we have a really awesome bike/running trail right behind our house. So sad I'm not running as much anymore...itching to have this baby so I can start again! (does that sound lame?)

I like to run on the treadmill at the gym while I watch the 4 different TV's in front of me. I get to watch the news and ET! I run outside more when I am training for races, but at my age the concrete is rough on my knees unless I go to the track by my house.
