fitflops: a cynic's review

my ortho recommended these as i have knee and ankle problems. originally, i balked at the idea -- my 60 yr old mom wears these! he insisted that they are 'sturdier' and provide better support than the everyday cheapy flops that i love (he is also always on me about heels and 'cutsey shoes').
anyway, after much debate, i decided to give them a try. i figured i could wear them bumming around running errands or something at least. i chose the original walkstar classic which i thought looked a bit sporty-er than the newer styles. the classic has matte leather and striped deatil on the strap as opposed to the patent leather look on the newer ones.
i must say, i am sold! these really are pretty awesome. my knee feels better already! they are extremely comfortable and don't look anywear near as ridiculous as i thought they might -- and lord knows they don't look anywhere near as craptastic as crocs!

now for the fit:
fitflops only come in whole sizes. if you wear a half size, i would recommend sizing down to the nearest whole size. i generally wear an 8.5 (even a 9 in running shoes ) and the eight is perfect for me.

I wanted to try them as well but my feet are too narrow!!

I will probably end up buying a pair of Reebok Easy Tones....have you heard of those?

Are you a runner? I was interested in the stability thing as well (my knees tend to get a bit wonky after 5 miles), but was worried that they would make my calves tight and therefore create problems when I run (in sneakers, duh).

No not me. I can't run without my ankles giving out.

I looooove my Fit Flops. I got them maybe 2 years ago, walked all around Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an everyday in them, then promptly lost track of them before I left for Taiwan

They're super comfy, and actually they don't look as noticeably dorky as you'd think. Too bad they've jacked the prices up on them.

like hammer, my ankles and knee hurt in less than a mile.

Ling

OT, but for people who want to get into running but never have been able to, I recommend the couch to 5k plan...it's how i started running again after multiple stress fractures in both ankles. totally gradual and great for building joint and ligament strength.

They aren't narrow on me -- and my feet have widened b/c of pregnancy.

I ordered a 7 and they were pretty big...

I had them throughout my pregnancy and loved them

Gave me support when other shoes/flip flops didn't

As far as "burning calories" and "sculpting muscles" -- nada. Good support though...

Wish they made them prettier... They are a tad bulky

ETA: Try them Danielle!

i haven't had them long enough to say one way or another.
jessani, i figure they won't really hinder your running.

Endless has them with overnight shipping...
but the sporty stripe renders them uneligible for work.
Could these be harmless enough?

Work is casual enough that I can wear jeans and pretty flip-flops to work, but sporty gym type clothes are a no-go.

i think those would work jess.
honestly, the strap comes up higher on the foot and is pretty much hidden by the boot cut flare of my jeans.
then again, i guess when you sit down it would most likely show.
i got mine from endless too. didn't find any better deals once shipping was figured in.

Jill, what colors did you get. My feet have gone to hell from the 12 hr standing shifts I work and I've been finding lately my reefs have my feet hurting on the weekends more than they used to.

i got the black ones here.

i didn't realize it until i wore them almost all day, but the stitching is actually pink and there is a faint pink strip on the strap.
i am generally not a fan of pink, but you really can't tell unless you look closely. for the most part it just looks off-white.

I've had them for a year

Wore them throughout during my pregnancy and after I gave birth

They held up pretty well

Better than my sneakers and insole supports

I ordered a pair from endless in a size 7...I'm usually a 7.5 so I hope they work. I ended up getting the navy walkstars...the oasis has some reviews that said the strap was not comfy. I hope they fit!!

^jessani, I usually hate flip flops (can't stand the thong part), but because the straps go higher up on your foot they don't...flip flop as much? Does that make any sense? I feel like with the straps, it stays on your foot much easier.

the flop is what irritates me as well- they'll get here tomorrow!
And then i will shock AF members at our meetup with my terrible style decisions, because I plan on wearing them.

I got them, love them, and have been wearing nonstop. They are SO comfortable. I went for a walk with liz this morning for an hour and they were more comfortable than sneakers. If only they were slightly more fashionable.
I kind of want another pair in a different color...i got navy stripes this time.
