Zumba vs. Iyengar Yoga?

I know they are two completely different forms of exercise, but I'm curious what the pros/cons are of each one. I am going to take a class at the Rec Center...just not sure which one. I was originally planning on taking Zumba, but it got moved to Tuesday nights (I missed the first class) and I'd have to talk to Brian to see if he could take me then.

Thanks for any and all feedback!

I know there is a yoga thread on here, so you can read more on that.

I personally have never tried Zumba, but I LOVE yoga. Yoga makes me strong, lean, and flexible. Some people tell me it's too slow for them, but I see great physical gains when I do it faithfully. So, personally, I don't crave fast. Yoga also calms me- it's a great de-stressor. I honestly feel yoga works miracles both inside and out.

princessfashion,

What are your fitness goals? Increased flexibility? Cardio? Strength?

Iyengar yoga is quite 'slow' - as far as yoga styles are concerned, it focuses heavily on alignment and less on flow as you would find in a Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga or Power Yoga class. Its focus is proper alignment in the postures (and postures are held for a longer period of time than other styles) and uses many props (blocks, straps, etc.).

I don't know much about Zumba, but I think Zumba would be a better workout, per se than Iyengar Yoga (that said, yoga is very beneficial, no matter what style you practice!)

Thank you so much for the input pslucky and dwd. I think, based on what you've both said, I would enjoy Zumba much more than the yoga. I will keep an eye out for the other yoga classes you mentioned, dwd. They seem more suited to my interests.

I would try out both classes a couple of times - you have nothing to lose. It would be the most beneficial to take both if you have time, as Zumba is good for burning calories and Yoga is great for flexibility. Personally I like Zumba a lot more just because its not so slow.
