Belly Dancing

So lately I started taking a class at the gym called "The Goddess Workout". it's Belly Dancing with a little inspiration from yoga, pole dancing, stripper walking, jazz and ballet turned into a low intensity but crazy sweat inducing workout! We get to wear the fun hip scarves and just let go. It's a women only class with the lights off and candles lit and the music is just too fun! George Michael, Madonna, old Britney, ABBA, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and some traditional Belly Dancing music as well. It is one of the hardest workouts for my legs and core that I have ever done!

Has anyone/Is anyone taken/taking Belly Dancing for fun or for a workout or for both? I'd love to hear thoughts from other students!

That sounds like a really fun workout! I take Zumba classes right now, and I love them. They are a fun break for me.

^It's a cardio dance class....typically very latin inspired. We also do some reggaetones and hip hop. It's such a fun class, and even if you're not a dancer, you just go with it.

Zumba is awesome! I didn't think I would like it because I can't dance at all, but that doesn't matter. It's still so fun!
I haven't been to class in a while, but I was typically burning approx. 500 calories in an hour.

Our instructor even threw in a little belly dancing sometimes as well.

That sounds like so much fun! I've always wanted to do the stripper aerobics classes, but none are offered close to me. Carmen Electra has a video but I've never gotten around to ordering it. She was on Oprah once showing Oprah her moves, that was great!

That video is crap. I have it, it's stupid, terrible and slow moving. You don't break a sweat or get a good workout either. Save your money.

After I had my third baby, I took belly dancing lessons for several months and I LOVED IT. Then the studio moved too far away

I couldn't get the cymbals all figured out, but the moves are so fun and it is indeed a great core and leg workout. It really helped me get back into shape after having a baby.

OMG Tess, I went to my first Zumba class at my gym this past Monday. It was intense!

It was pretty obvious I was the new person. More than like 80% of the class are regulars and the instructor literally didn't go over anything slowly or "teach" anything. She just danced and moved and everyone followed along. I was so lost at first... after a few moves, I got the hang of it and was doing better, but it was really hard to catch on at first. I want to continue to go because it is a lot of fun, but I think it's going to take me a few weeks to catch on. I have a dance/cheer background, but it's more hip-hop and this is latin-influenced, so the moves are COMPLETELY different. I felt so horrible seeing 50+ year old women moving their hips better than I could

^^I felt the same way. I didn't know what to expect, but the room was packed (several ladies older than my mom) and the instructor just started dancing. I could tell there were a lot of regulars because most people already had the moves pretty well down.
It was really fun even though I was totally lost when it came to most of the moves. I just did my best to follow along. You burn a LOT of calories and don't get bored like with the treadmill. I definitely want to start going a few times a week.

Glad you liked it Anna & Tess! I love going, but missed this week. I usually go at least once. I started with the very first class at my gym, so I think I have the moves down pretty good.
