Pre workout energy?

Looking for a good pre workout energy shake and a good creatine and glutamine supplement. Anyone have a good recommendation or what should I be looking for with regards to ingredients?

glutamine: BS (imo, and i had a good reason for that, which i cant remember)

pre-workout: anything with simple carbs. white bread is great. i don't really know why you would need it in shake form, although id imagine the ingredients would be some simple carbs + a small amount of protein. bananas are also good before athletic activity.

creatine:

you have some different choices.

the most common is creatine monohydrate. this is also the one that has been used in all of the studies proving both the safeness of creatine and efficacy. make sure you get micronized creatine that was made in Germany, and not anywhere else.

There are others such as buffered creatine, creatine ethyl ester, and some additional ones. Claims are that they are more effective, reduce bloating, etc etc. These claims are not proven, nor is their safety.

For muscle endurance try Purple Wraath. Its very expensive but I'm using it right now with great results. Take note that its not so much an energy pump but more of an endurance booster. It contains Beta-Alanine which is a highly effective ingredient for muscles.

Beta-Alanine is really good! I need to get me some of that!

The biggest problem that i find with a lot of pre-workout supplements is that they have caffeine in them which is OK but not if you are like me and are trying to cut down all together. I just finished the last of my free samples from this bodybuilding convention i went to and all of them had stupid amounts of caff in them.

I did find this stuff called Spike that you can get off of t-nation.com. It comes with or without caffeine and even the caff free one is really great pre-workout.

If you don't mind a little bit of caff, something like a cup or two of yerba matte is good for a post workout boost and has some antioxidants in it too!

That does look really good!

I LOVE citrulline. I was taking it before with Argenine pre-workout and i found it worked really well for giving me a good pump.

I just started using FRS Healthy Energy endorsed by Lance Armstrong, great for endurance! I really like it so far and have been using about a month, helps a lot if I take 30min before my runs.

I use purple wraath too. Sometimes though it doesn't keep me as hydrated as I would like and I have to switch to good old water.

I just picked up some new stuff though NOW Sports Beta-Alanine. My trainer recommended it. I have only been using it for a week but it doesn't really make my mouth feel sticky and dry like the purple wraath does sometimes ...

Bodybuilding.com - NOW Beta-Alanine - 100% Pure Powder! On sale now!

First, protein serves no purpose pre workout. The rate of absorption in which the amino acids in protein from any source absorb takes way too long to benefit a workout. Protein is essential for muscle repair, and growth, however taken post workout and through out the day is beneficial, in correlation to your goals (ie. weight loss, muscle gain)

Creatine monohydrate is the very first creatine to hit the market. Affective at high doses. Many people beleive it does more than its capable of. Its strictly to increase muscle energy and improve the onset of muscle fatigue. In a nut shell it allows you to reuse the biproducts of ATP (muscle energy) for recirculation, in turn more muscle energy. (push longer, harder, better) Downfalls of creatine monohydrate is that it requires an insulin spike in order to absorb. Insulin shuttles the creatine to your muscles for use. In order to achieve this insulin spike high glycemic juice must and should be used. (dextrose based juice - cranberry, grape) For people trying to get leaner, or rid their diets of sugar, creatine monohydrate is a poor choice. Creatine ethyl ester, which is basically the same as creatine monohydrate, but bound with an alcohol molecule. This creatine absorbs in low doses, and requires no insulin spike to absorb. The safety has been proven, the studies are out there. Unbiased, double blind studies are available all over the place.

The best pre workouts contain basically everything in proper doses, and forms. They can be caffeine free, or with caffeine. Main ingredients in these SHOULD be a good form of absorbable creatine, about 2-3 grams per serving, 4 grams of arginine, (which induces a muscle pump by pushing more blood to the muscles through increased nitric oxide production) beta alanine is an amino acid that buffers lactic acid (pretty simple) taurine, tyrosine, two aminos that affect the nervous system naturally by improving neurological funtion ( improved brain energy and focus). Many brands will have there niche, an ingredient they claim makes theirs above the rest, but at the end of the day ignore the brand, ignore the color of the bottle, and forget the advertisements. Look for those major ingredients and they will be there to ENHANCE your workout, PERIOD. They are not for muscle growth, mass gains, or weight loss. THey are simply a natural workout enhancement. These supplements are SOLELY for weight lifting or short action excercises. These supplements will HAMPER long distance or cardiovascular based activities. The last thing anyone wants is a HUGE hard as a rock muscle pump in their legs during a jog, or spin class. Supplements for those activities include carbohydrates, electrolytes, and certain minerals and vitamins.

POST workout supplements should contain high protein, and high carbs from simple and complex if you are trying to put on muscle. We have a window of 10 minutes where our muscles will accept everything we put in, after that, we miss the boat. I have been in the personal training/nutrition business for years and we OWN a popeyes supplements.
any further questions feel free to pm us...

Where? Creatine ethyl ester hasn't been around for long enough for long term studies to be completed.

The one that really baffles me is the buffered creatine. Some small-time company altered the molecule, did some small scale test performed by their own mediocre "scientists", and threw it on the shelves without any study whatsoever.

Creatine Ethyl Ester has been proven to be less effective than creatine monohydrate. The addition of the ethyl group causes accelerated breakdown to creatinine in the stomach. Plus, it tastes like battery acid.

I was getting a slight tingle when i started taking purple wraath but after a week or 2 of taking it I no longer had the tingle. Now I am getting it again with the NOW Sports BA but I am sure after my body gets used to it that will not be as noticeable.

I'm curious to see the study where you read this?
and I'm wondering how you are tasting it as it's in capsule form? (if your not taking it in capsule then obviously it's going to taste bad)
and yes stomach acid will have an effect on it, but the fact that it's bound with alcohol the body absorbs it very quickly through the small intestine (we all know how well our bodies absorb alcohol) so we need much smaller amounts, therefore skipping the side effects normally caused from monohydrate.
it is only beneficial when taken within a half an hour pre-workout, and only on workout days.
