Levi 501 STF [update]

So I just picked up a pair of 501 STF today at sears. It's my first pair of dry denim and I decided to go w/ these because they're cheap and easily available at the local mall before my trip to Taiwan. I'm hoping the 10+ hr plane ride and heavy wear over there will help break these in. but I definitely did not expect the rise to be so high though, they look huge...we'll see how it fits after they finish hot soaking. pre-soak pics:

after a wash and about 7 or 8 months worth of wear I think:

I would have expected a bit more shrinkage. What were the pre and post soak measurements?

Yea, post soak bare looks any different from pre soak. What was your soaking method?

well, I wear them more on the hips rather than higher on the waist. so with the high rise (10 or 11in i think), the 30 length was a little long. I didn't measure them pre soak, but right now the inseam is at 26.5. the waist didn't seem to shrink much though. it was a little tighter, but wearing them for the day seems to have stretched it again. i measured 15.5 w/ dip. i bought these sz 31 waist. as for soaking, i folded them and soaked them in a large bucket w/ boiled water for 3 hrs. I switched the water w/ boiling water like 3 times.

26.5.....I think you made a typo there...lol. Otherwise, you'd be like, 4 feet tall lol.

Also, I'm not sure, but I think soaking them while folded will prevent them from full shrinking. You could try throwing them in the wash and putting them in the dryer to make sure all the shrinkage is out of the way.

oops, meant 27.5" haha
but yeah, folding it might've prevented some shrinkage. I think lengthwise though, it's pretty much not going to shrink much more. the waist and ass area could do w/ some more shrinking. I added pics of my measurements.

I hate to disappoint you but those 501s are not shrink to fit. They are preshrunk. The shrink to fit are coded 501XX on the patch. You will not get much if any shrinkage out of those.

from what i experienced before, my 501s did not shrink much either. Maybe the length, but overall, it was pretty big. I actually sized down my order this time and I have no intention of washing them until they have stretched out.

those fit nicely...no flapping fabric on the sides or what not.

These are definitely STF jeans. I worked at the Levi's Store and they look exactly the same. However, customers did come in and complain about how they didn't shrink to as much as the label said, so I told most people to size up at MOST one size from their normal size

so..yeah, I probably could have gone with a 30W instead of 31W since it stretches back out a fair amount making them somewhat loose. I could probably go w/o a belt but I still wear one to make sure it stays on the hips. are 501s usually meant to be worn somewhat higher though? because it has a pretty high front rise, added to the 30L inseam making it pretty long presoak

^He said he didn't measure them presoak...

OP, I know your question is old, but 501s are the "original jean" from when Levi's first invented jeans, so the rise is bound to be a little more outdated

yeah, sorry I forgot to measure them presoak! but, I'm pretty sure the inseam really was right about 30". The waist is definitely bigger than I'd like right now since it's stretched so much after 3 months of literally everyday wear. I definitely could have stuck with my regular size, 30, and probably could have sized down 1 or 2 sizes. I just sag them a little bit right now since they're so loose. I'm also planning to soak just the waist by leaving the waistband hanging in the bathtub.

ohh thanks that's what I thought no wonder the 30" inseam felt soo long!

I should post up some updates once I get around to it, I'm being too lazy right now hehe.

Hi.

Is there a 501STF and a 501xx STF? Does the xx version shrink more?

I normally wear a 32/32, so I went to my local Levi's store and bought a 33/34 501, clearly marked "Shrink-to-fit" on the labels.

I soaked in very hot water for 30 minutes, refreshing the water every 5-10 minutes.

It shrank down to about a 33/33. It shrunk nowhere near the 1" in the waist and 3" in the length that it was supposed to.

So should I have looked for a 501xx? Would it have shrank differently?

Thanks!

-j

That SHOULDN'T be the case. The XX denotes STF as it's the original type of denim used by Cone Mills to produce the original 501's.

In the future, please don't hijack the dry journals and instead, post in the small questions thread or start a new one outside of the journals. Coni, could you move this post and the last to a different thread?

Just thought I'd post an update on how these are now. I admit the fit sucks, should have tried getting a 28 waist. Waist shrinks down to be just right after a wash, but it stretches out a lot in between washes. Also, not happy with the fading from wear, I'm guessing probably because of the bagginess. (maybe I should have starched it)
