bhuynh's first dry denim project/journal

Well, I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a pair of Nudie Slim Jim in Dry Broken Twill. I have been amazed with everyones' progress and had to try raw denim for myself.

Just some background info; I am someone who works out regularly and so, I cut 10-15lbs for Spring-Summer and in the Winter I gain a lot back during my bulk phase. Because of this I decided to go with my usual size 30 (which fit quite snug on my crotch and thigh), instead of sizing down to a 29, which I found were unbareable to wear.

Day 1

This is going to be a slow project for me but I'm really excited to notice some results.

I already have my first question: Should I have the jean hemmed (slightly longer than my other denim) or should I continue to roll the bottom and let the stacks develop before hemming later on?

Nice fit

Wear them as is because they still have to go through soaks and a wash (so they will shrink a tad in length), after all of that I would hem them if needed. plus you will get cool stack fades

Nice fit mate!

I would suggest considering hemming after a couple of soaks or a machine wash if you are planning to wear sneakers regularly.
Keep them cuffed if you plan to wear boots all day.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Here's a little update (Day 2):

I had the jean hemmed today. They are still quite long which allows me to let the stacks develop and it gives me the option of cuffing or not cuffing. I know the picture does not show much change but to achieve this desired look, I would have had to roll the cuff 4-5 times. Where as now, I can do it by rolling one or two times.

After going through many dry journals, I have noticed a trend of blow outs by the crotch. This is quite obvious because of the amount of wear and tear you need to put on the denim to get a desired distressed look. Having some extra wunder under and thin cotton, I decided to reinforce the crotch/inner thigh.

Last pic is just a day of wear.

I plan on updating once every month, so come back and see the transformation! Cheers!

Good thing you didn't size down to a 29, I think the fit is great as is

Hey everyone!

It has been quite a while since I last updated. Don't worry I have not given up on my first pair of dry demin. During the summer, progress has just been really slow. For the past 5 months I have only worn my Nudies 2-3 times each week for the reason that it was too hot and I wore linen shorts a lot this summer. Now that the weather is getting cooler, I find that I am remotivated to continue to mode these jeans to my body.

Here are my slow progress pics. I also did some research and found the broken twill wash take a little longer to fade. I personally do not like the the back pocket fade, so I do not wear my wallet with these jeans.

Close up pics of the honeycomb behind my knees.

Here are 2 pics without flash. You can see the start of the fades better.

I'm already starting to look for a second project. I am really interested in purchasing a pair of Samurai but can't find any locally and cannot pull the trigger buying one online without trying on a pair.

Buying online isn't so bad. The guys selling this stuff (selfedge, blueingreen, ironheart.co.uk for example) really know how this stuff fits and are super helpful. I would imagine the majority of their business is done online so they have to know their shit so they can help their customers get the right fit. The dry denim community is also a good source of info when it comes to fit. Chances are someone owns the pair you're looking for in your size. Giles@ironheart was a ton of help with my 1001 and got me sized perfect. Treasurehoard helped me with my s710 sizing and it all worked out well. The sizing for my 3sixteens was helped by Kiya. It was a good fit and what I was looking for until my legs got larger from getting back into cycling+weight lifting to prep for the upcoming swim season.

Here's another update: 7 months in and there is now some visible fading. Mainly the whiskering by my hips and crotch. The honey combs behind my knees have set in but because the denim is softer it is harder to get any fading at this stage.

I hope this does not turn into a famous crotch blowout. I reinforced the denim when I first purchased them but the patches on my bum have since fallen out due to daily wear.

I find that the denim did not stretch very much and remained much the same size. The main difference was the softening of the denim with wear. This is a good thing because I purchased my TTS rather than, sizing 1 down as recommended.

I will try and post fit pics so that you can see the difference from my day 1 pics.

Damn, that's very little fading for 7 months. How often do you wear them?

I wear them about 3 times a week. I did some research and found that the broken twill takes quite a while to fade.

Well it has been another month since my last update. Here are some pics accompanied by my new Tanner Goods belt. These pics are without flash as I found the flash blacked everything out.

Detailed pics of honeycomb

It has been nearly a year since my last update in this thread. I have since purchased several other projects including Grim Tim Dry Organic Orange Selvedge and Thin Fin Ecru Embo. This pair was placed on a brief hiatus from rotation (once a week wear). Since my last update, I had soaked this pair once, cut the cuffs off and replaired a crotch blow out.

I have noticed that the honeycombs are not as prominent but the overall fade and colour has changed drastically.

Here's a shot of the crotch repair
