New to Raw/Dry Denim

I've decided to abandon the designer labels (true religion, 7fam, R&R, etc.) simply because they just fit too baggy on me. I've seen that with raw denim, it is much slimmer, very unique and personalized to your doing. I'm willing to take the time to break them in and wait for a long period of time before wash.

With a budget of $200, what brands of raw/dry denim would you guys recommend? I want a pair that will be durable, yet very comforting- not a pair that will easily rip on me. Looking for a slim fit, but not skin tight! (Dark washes are preferred.)

Thank you!

Around 200 you're looking at 3sixteen, nudie, naked&famous. Actual japanese companies you would be looking at ~300+. In general the denim shouldn't ever rip on you. Diesel has a line of "dry" denim and it is shit so stay away from those. All 3 of the companies I mentionaed have a host of different cuts and colors so you should be able to find what you are looking for. Browse the dry journals here to get a feel for what they will look like and head over to superfuture to get an ever better glimpse of the jeans.

I see. I've found some jeans I like in Nudies (Slim Jims) & 3Sixteen (ST-200X). Any differences between those 2 brands? And if I were to stretch my budget to $300, what Japanese brands would you recommend?

Edit: I might actually bite the bullet and buy my first pair of dry denims (Imperial). How is the quality on them?

At 300 I would likely look at pure blue japan or eternal. I don't know a whole lot about imperial. I don't know of anything negative about the brand and selfedge wouldn't carry them if they were poor quality.

I have the nudie slim jim dry japan and the st-200x and i feel the nudies are better quality. That being said I didn't get to wear the 3sixteens more than 3 or 4 times as I outgrew them. The denim feels lighter than the nudies. The slim jim is a great cut.

Slim Jim dry Japan? What is the difference between that and regular nudies? And what online shop can I find the Japan versions?

Edit: Also, are Pure Blue Japan and Real Blue Japan the same thing?

I'm not sure what regular nudies are but it is just a variation on the wash that the slim jims come in. I'm not sure which online stores sell the dry japans. You'll have to do a bit of digging online ofr that one, I purchased mine at a local store.

They are different companies with different cuts as far as i know. From what I have seen RJB on average tends to be more expensive whereas pure blue japan has a range of prices.

I just can't seem to find any Nudie dry Japan's. Well, I've stumbled across a few pairs I've been looking into for my second pair, since I just need a rotation of 2-3 jeans for now.

What is the difference between 3Sixteen ST-200X & 3Sixteen+ 721BSP? Is it really worth the extra $85, because I am more fond of the color on the 721BSP more.

And for the black coated denim, I know a lot of wear and tear is needed for that leathery shine. Do the same rules of dry denim apply to them as well? (Generally 6 months of use before wash)

Here are the links to each:

Cultizm.com - Nudie Jeans Nudie Jeans Slim Jim Organic Dry Ecru Embo 110357

Cultizm.com - Nudie Jeans Nudie Jeans Slim Jim Dry Black Coated 110160

Cultizm.com - Grim Tim Dry 46 Dips Nudie Jeans Grim Tim Dry 46 Dips 111083

3sixteen+ 721BSP - Slim Tapered Black - $300.00 : Self Edge : Japanese Selvedge Denim

ST-200x - Slim Leg Black Selvedge - $215.00 : Self Edge : Japanese Selvedge Denim

I would truly appreciate any helpful opinions! Thank you!

6 months + before a wash is mainly for the "cheaper" brands (nudie, 3sixteen ect) that aren't dyed as well as the true japanese brands like Samurai, Flathead, Eternal, PBJ. I could wash my Samurais every couple weeks if I needed to and they would still fade nicely but a pair of nudies that are washed regularly will not fade as well since the dye will "wash out" and won't give you the desired contrast in your fades. The dry japan is just a different denim Nudie uses that has more of an electric blue color as it fades. Looks pretty cool but it's really an opinion thing.

Imperials are a decent brand but if you're going to put in the time, I'd suggest one of the aforementioned true Japanese brands. I stared with Nudies (RRDS and a pair of RR greycast) then picked up a pair of Imperials before switching to Flathead and now buy only Samurais. The Samurais feel like wearing cardboard at first (you grow to love and actually desire this!) but after some time they are soften up and truly form to your body. IMO they are well worth the extra initial investment. You can also look for a pair that was soaked by someone else and then didn't fit, I've picked up several pairs at a big discount doing this.

I could not find any colors/cuts I'd like in Samurai, Flathead, Eternal, & PBJ in my size. I've decided to go with 2 pairs of 3Sixteen+ X Self Edge (Black & Indigo) and 1 pair of Imperial X Self Edge (Black) as my rotation.

Thank you to everyone who replied to this thread!
